Why Shadow the Hedgehog is the Best Game Ever Made

Post by Rhys Coker (SB) »

Shadow the Hedgehog is the best Shadow game made by Sonic. On surface level, many people would see the game as just another standard third person shooter, but upon closer inspection, you can pick out all of these minute details that developer Rockstar Games put into this exhilarating masterpiece.

The game starts off with Shadow the Hedgehog saying he can't remember anything at all, but then he says he can remember things, so we can already tell that this is a protagonist who is able to make a stand and actually make progress. But suddenly aliens fall from the sky and Goku from Dragonballz Z shows up and tells Shadow to find the 7 Crazy Crystals, and the game begins. Shadow the Hedgehog completely breaks the mold of previous Sonic games, as it innovates on to the series, with the addition of guns and vehicles, which not only serve as complete game changers, but gives us, the player, something to relate to, as cars are able to bring us to a destination, or a goal, like a goal ring, being a great artistic choice by developer Reggie fils Amie.

The games is also a metaphor for modern day racism. The aliens are constantly referred to as the black creatures, and are treated in a derogatory manner, and what starts as a peaceful protest, later turns violent once G.U.N. is sent out by the white man to destroy the black creatures. Shadow becomes caught up in this mess, as the military is initially friendly towards him in the first mission, but later becomes hostile as the commander sees Shadow with the black aliens, and thus Shadow becomes, if you will, a shadow to the rest of the world. Once regarded as a hero, now reduced to public enemy number one.

After you collect the first couple of Crazy Crystals, Goku gets mad at you for disobeying orders, despite the fact that when you first meet him, his request is for you to find the Crazy Crystals. This lets the player know that Goku is in fact a tragic character stricken with Alzheimers, giving the player a window into the harsh reality that is the real world. Goku then teleports us to the Great Wall of China, where we meet up with Knux, who we learn is dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts as he jumps straight into a tornado.

We are later tasked in the game to assassinate the president, who we learn is responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11th, because we are informed by Government Spy Rouge the Bat that jet fuel cannot melt steel beams. Shadow the Hedgehog is a game that entices the player to think outside the box, to think that information given to us may not actually be 100% true. So you destroy the President's escape pod, but he had Obamacare so he is still alive. We soon after discover that Shadow is in fact a robot duplicate of the real Shadow, created by Dr. Eggman, so he sneaks into Eggman's base, and he asks Shadow to activate his defense system. After helping the Doctor, he attacks Shadow with a giant slot machine robot that shoots missiles at itself. Then Shadow vows to rule the world with an army of Shadow robots and karate chops Eggman in the throat and kills him.

Shadow the Hedgehog completely defies the expectations of the gaming community, and gives us a heartwarming tale of a woodland creature out to make a difference in the world. Shadow stands up to prejudice, helps people with mental illnesses, and acts a vigilante of sorts against a tyrannical government that flies airplanes into skyscrapers. It's a game that gives game critics what they really want in an adventure game. IGN complained that Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire had "too much water", so Shadow the Hedgehog has only one stage with water even it. It's a game that takes artistic risks, like implementing swear words to give characters a stronger sense of emotion. Developer Hideo Kojima created Shadow the Hedgehog to be a game which questions the moral ambiguity of modern society and the power of choice. Our actions have consequences, but sometimes, you have to take actions that others may deem as unconventional, but upon farther investigation, it may benefit mankind as a whole. It's just like Shadow said on the true hero path of the game before saving the planet; "This is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me."

I personally think Go-Go! The Fast Trilogy with large the Rat and Snails the Bad Monkey are the best Sonic games in the series especially Large the Rat and Chuckles the Enchilada.
