My Rant. (Do not click this if you are gonna be an a-hole)
It's starting to ball me that some people go and start a flamewar on a user's thread or something. and then People try to get it to stop, but that doesn't work. Eventually, The topic gets locked by a mod all because of that with No exceptions. What's maddening the most is that if it's in suggestions. and People start drama just because they do not agree with it. and then BOOM. Next thing we know, topic gets locked by mod due to drama. and possibly the user who made the topic would try and remake it in hopes of it not getting derailed, but then people deliberately derail it once more, and then boom. ****** locked again. What really bothers me is that: Why can't the mods just go in the middle of the drama, tell the people to stop what they are doing, or else warnings will be handed out, instead of locking it right on the spot. I've made numerous suggestions, but only to be locked by drama started by people just because they don't agree with it. and that includes hotheads like Fox Boy and Spam. I even made a suggestion about the mods not handing out warnings and stuff like that, but it got locked. All because of Drama started by people just because they do not agree with it. and i am sick and tired of this occuring to me. In fact. on another forum i was on, There was Drama, and a mod said to the users to stop the drama, or else warnings will be handed out. and they all stopped. all without locking the topic. Why can't the mods just come to their senses and start warning people to stop the drama or else warnings will be handed out or the topic being locked? It's just stupid!

Why don't you just ignore the "Hotheads." Most of the time the topics are locked (I think) because of You and the antagonizer fighting with each other.
I was super young when I used this forum and probably said weird or odd stuff. Dont hold me to it!
Re: My Rant. (Do not click this if you are gonna be an a-hol
Ignoring them won't work, it'll just keep them spreading like a fire.
We had a troll in our my little pony fan club before, ignoring him didn't do a thing. In fact, all he did was post even more nsfw photos I keep saved to show anyone who wants to defend the sucker.
They need a lashing really, nothing's keeping them in check.
They're like leaks in a damn, locks are like bandages. When one leak is covered another one opens, that's how it works. Anyone trying to tell you otherwise wants it to stop.
If you don't want to listen to me that's fine, eventually someones going to come in this topic and talk about how bad I am. I decided that when that happens I'll gleefully ignore them this time around and focus on the topic at hand instead of try to defend myself against someone who doesn't think of me positively at all.

I also believe simply locking a thread is not the best solution.
Don't tell the moderators or admins that though. They get mad if you dare do something as insipid as tell them what is apparently "how they are supposed to do their jobs."

Re: My Rant. (Do not click this if you are gonna be an a-hol
If I remember right, your topic was locked for off-topicness AND the fact that you flamed everyone on it that was off-topic/didn't agree with your opinion that was, in fact, someone you didn't like. This would of course lead to the locking of the topic since the topic doesn't have a purpose anymore.
Then you re-made your topic and Chaos locked it immediately, something you should address him about privately to get yourself to understand why he might have.
There's also the fact that people don't agree with some of the things you say and you're saying the topic shouldn't be locked if everyone disagrees? Suggestions aren't always going to be picked, maybe that's why Chaos locked your topic. They don't like your suggestion, but appreciate that you suggested it.
Yeah, that's my two cents. You're probably right about the whole, "Give out warnings not locks" but I'm pretty sure this would all be avoided if you didn't wait for a mod to stop by, reported the posts, or asked a mod specifically about this.
If you can find one online that is.

Fox Boy, there's a point where opinions and flaming become the same thing.
The fact that not everyone disagreed with it, only the people who bothered to continue did.
Two wrong's don't make a right, and you and a lot of other people have been in the wrong for a while and it's about time people like us stop stooping down to their levels as well.

Sorry, I forgot that one person who did.
Editing my post....
Or not since I never said that everyone disagreed.
Or at least, with his topic. I was exampling.

It takes two to tango and the tango is the dance of trolls. The obvious response should be to report any inappropriate behavior and continue the discussion as if the post never happened.
Here's an example:
I decide to discuss Digimon. I make a Digimon topic and everyone who posts talks about their memories of Digimon and how much they liked the show, praising the efforts to make a coherent plot over advertise the franchise. Then someone makes a post, "DIGIMON IS SO STUPID! POKEMON IS WAY BETTER AND DIDN'T DIE OUT COMPLETELY!" An extreme post that is in no way constructive to the discussion and will likely cause reactions of outrage? The obvious behavior should be to pretend the post was never made, when you make your next reply to the topic, and report the post for attempting to cause trouble.
Sadly that last part is where most of us stop thinking properly and decide to out argue the person who clearly cannot be swayed in the opposite direction of their statement. If we can practice this we can avoid getting our topics locked.
But let's suggest the post was valid. Perhaps it was a different message, more like, "I really didn't like Digimon very much. I guess some of the designs were cool and I watched the show sometimes. I just didn't really like it." This is a perfectly fine post, as I didn't specify that the topic had to be solely about the pros of Digimon or how great it was. Obviously there is no winning an argument with this individual, as we cannot take them back to their childhood and make them love Digimon, but there's no reason to get upset or report them. Again, we all have a habit of reacting poorly to posts like this example, treated it like a slap to the face rather than someone's differing opinion.
Basically we're doomed till we work on understanding the difference between efforts to piss us off and a differing opinion. And once we understand those, knowing how to react. I'm not sure how successful we could be in stopping people from feeding on bait, but there is at least a way to take care of it.

Re: My Rant. (Do not click this if you are gonna be an a-hol
Agreed that simply locking a topic is not the best answer. However, there is a point of no return: for example, when all the participants of the topic are off-topic and it doesn't look like it'll die down any time soon. All too often, we arrive to topics after they've reached that point of no return.
As said before, just stay on-topic, avoid the bait, and the topic doesn't get locked. Reporting the bait helps, too. If you want to have a good, honest conversation about it, however, use private messages.
A person trying to derail a topic is like a guy sticking a lighter into a tree and making a few sparks. People taking the bait is the forest being engulfed by flames. Little harm is done to the topic if people don't take the bait. If I a remember correctly, the MLP fanclub did not derail and get locked.Triert wrote:Ignoring them won't work, it'll just keep them spreading like a fire.

That depends on how adamant you are not to flame.Triert wrote:Fox Boy, there's a point where opinions and flaming become the same thing.
If I remember correctly, there was about a page of discussion before the topic veered off course. The point that all Mooncow had to do was a press a button if he wanted to have quick replies was made. Finally, the opinion that there's no need for quick replies was pretty much unanimous. Seeking to avoid the same off-topic outcome, and doubting that the majority of CI and Mooncow would change their minds so quickly, I locked the topic.Fox Thing wrote:Then you re-made your topic and Chaos locked it immediately, something you should address him about privately to get yourself to understand why he might have.

I remember in these situations, i did report all the bait, but guess what? It didn't work, and one of my topics got locked again. That's one thing that I forgot to mention, and that also bothers me. Also Triert has a bunch of good points here, and so does Crazo. But in the quick reply remake, I put A small saying to prevent it from getting derailed. But it still got locked.

Putting something saying "please don't do *so and so*" and thinking it'll prevent people from doing *so and so* is like putting up a sign that says "no skateboarding" and thinking nobody will skateboard there. It's not a guaranteed prevention.

uh-oh. looks like im an asshole.
If I were you, Red, I'd be careful what you're wishing for. Quit plying the victim card. In a lot of your suggestion topics people just, and quite simply, disagree with you. ****, I mean how you react you'd think they just said something so outrageous that it'd made babies and nuns cry all around the world. In fact YOU start A LOT of the drama. When someone disagrees with you you tell them that "they're point is invalid so stfu" when all they were doing was voicing their opinion. Okay, fine, Foxboy (with his downright hilarious posts) and Spam add fuel to the fire, I'll give you that, but do not pretend like you are not at fault, because you are. Yes, the mods should talk to those people who're causing the trouble, but do you really think they'd give a damn?
Red if I were you I would think about what you say before you say it. It'll help with all this "drama".
Now it is two in the morning. So I'm going to bed.

I didn't really want to join in in this topic, but Wicca pretty much summed it up (except for the 2am part): People voice their opinion, you get annoyed at them for disagreeing. You also take the troll bait instead of just ignoring it. Yes, I did add fuel to that fire, but it was for a good reason. inb4flamedforthatlastcommentwiccachao wrote:uh-oh. looks like im an asshole.

Crazo, there wouldn't be drama to begin with if no one threw bait.
Wicca, those people were incredibly rude you know?
Crash, you're just as bad for adding the fuel.
Red, stop getting trolled.
Triert, stop hunting down trolls.
Can we all agree to disagree and try to move to the right path? I mean honestly, none of us are innocent at all. Of course we have freedom of speech and all that crap, but we also abuse it a lot. Instead of accusing each other and say how bad we are how about we start trying to improve the website?

There were only a select very few members that were ever even remotely rude to Red in the suggestions forum, with Red being particularly nasty to those who did nothing to him except simply disagree (Wicca is the best example of this).

When no one takes the bait then drama can't form. I can insult you all I want but if no one responds to the insults then the closest thing to drama is what word would spread about my opinion of you. Drama requires more than one involved party.Triert wrote:Crazo, there wouldn't be drama to begin with if no one threw bait.

It's really easy to get baited Crazo, as you can tell from the forum and the new people. So we shouldn't hope that someone doesn't take the bait, that would just be lazy. We have to get rid of the people insulting eachother here first.
Let's say the person who took the bait gets punished too, it's the same thing as a teacher punishing her entire class for one student.

Re: My Rant. (Do not click this if you are gonna be an a-hol
We're not hoping, Triert. We're taking preventive methods by informing people there are far better methods of taking care of troublemakers. If enough people who are regulars and take bait stopped then it is likely the people laying the bait will give up. If the fish aren't biting you just go home. This is the only method we can take to minimize the fighting and arguing that rotates solely around insults. Mainly because we can't just magically make people leave.
My high school actually had a zero tolerance policy. Even if you fought back in self defense you would get in trouble. The only way to avoid trouble would be to avoid the fray or curl up and take the hits while an authority is contacted. I rather like this because it teaches you to to leave the troublemakers to the people who can actually punish them.

Of course we can't make them leave silly, that's why we report those people.
Crazo, I'm not a fan of zero tolerance. I was suspended from my school once even when I didn't fight. Look into something first before you assume you know what you're talking about.

Zero tolerance only goes wrong when you can't back anything up. In a perfect world there are constant witnesses who will be completely honest. Given that all the data on this site is saved and stored no matter where it is, zero tolerance can fully function here. Just because you ended up in a poorly lit situation doesn't make the concept impossible to function.

Can is not the same thing as does, in a perfect, not even perfect website just one more attentive with more than one moderator that actually does his job.
