I recently became friends with Dr. Eggman's voice actor on Facebook. That's cool.

For quite some time now, I've had this lingering suspicion that the Japanese government created anime as a sort of weaponized autism to be unleashed quietly on America, in an attempt to rot out our youth and create an entirely un****able generation of kids who can't carry on their family lines. Some ol' generation lost supervillain ****. Why would they do that? Uh, I dunno, ask ******* Nagasaki! It adds up! It would have been a great plan, too, had it not backfired so spectacularly, what with Japan now being the mecca for weebs and sex weirdos! You guys did it, I'm proud of you!

On the flipside, Japan now has copious amounts of random English lying around, and from my understanding, just to look flashy.

Huh, where'd you get that from?chaoadventures wrote:On the flipside, Japan now has copious amounts of random English lying around, and from my understanding, just to look flashy.
Japan has had random english words in everything, they've done this for decades as Nova said.
If you ever play a Japanese video game in Japanese they're always going to have random english words in there. Like "Press Start" and "Continue".
I'm not entirely sure why, but I guess it'll be something post-WW2 related.
Re: It's been five days
Huh. Honestly, I always just figured it was the same reason we use random Chinese/Japanese characters for things like tattoos: namely, it looks exotic and foreign, even if no-one has a dang clue what it means. Maybe not. Research time!

Eh? Anime's been in America for decades too, if only less. What's your point? Besides even if this is a newer development, it still could be a retaliation by Japan for giving them a case of the English.
There's problems with the very idea of Japan making anime with the sole purpose of ruining the youth of America (,namely, the fact they also launched it on themselves).
Don't know why you need to be so critical of this.
Re: It's been five days
Hideaki Anno has actually been quoted saying that creators of anime are primarily autistic, and this could be true of all creative mediums. While I think that might be an exaggeration, I do think there is a possible connection.Xeno wrote:For quite some time now, I've had this lingering suspicion that the Japanese government created anime as a sort of weaponized autism...
Though Japan is hurting themselves way more with anime than we are. Watch "Welcome to the NHK" or "ReLIFE", and you'll see how socially damaged Japan is looking, though it isn't solely because of anime and games. But anime and games don't help.

My point is that what you said about japanese using english dialect randomly is completely wrong. I thought that was obvious. Please don't try to straw-man something as benign and stupid as "japanese have been using english words this year" "no they haven't theyve always used them"chaoadventures wrote:...Rajikaru wrote:Except that's been happening for decades now and didn't just start cause some idiots posted about it on tumblr

Re: It's been five days
This seems more like a really long line of misinterpretation.
When I said Japan includes random splashes of English, I didn't mean completely and literally random. I was talking about, as Retro said, they'll add coherent, (usually at least) well placed bits of
English with everything else.
But their main language isn't English and large portions of their stuff is in Japanese so there's no reason for them to have English, when it'll throw off those who don't. That's what I was saying the whole time.
That and I have no idea what this has to do with people who use Tumblr.
Re: It's been five days
No, it isn't a misunderstanding. They use random english dialect and pronunciations for flair, just like we use random kanji. Both countries have been doing it for years. It's not something new.

Now the question is, when did I ever say this was new?Rajikaru wrote:It's not something new.

Can a man without a weapon (not that you are this man) go up to the leader of another country and tell them they've lost the war, which means they've actually lost the war?
No, the man never would have made it and probably would have died before he got there and I forgot where I was going with this hyperbole-based story so I'll move on from that.
Once again, misinterpretation. You think I claimed Japan using English in their media was new. I never did. There's nothing I said in my original post that said this was new, ever. Just that this is a thing that exists.

Re: It's been five days
In all fairness, English probably makes up the largest portion of foreign loan words in the Japanese language after Chinese.
Just to list a few English words that have been imported into the Japanese language:
English: Romanized Japanese
Hamburger: Hanbaagaa
Cheeseburger:Chizubaagaa
Ice Cream: Aisu Kurimu
Pancakes/Hot Cakes:Hotto Keki
Television/T.V.: Terebi
Video Game: Terebi Gemu
Computer: Konpyutaa
Animation: Animeshon(nearly always abbreviated anime)
Soccer: Sokka(notably, Japan is about the only country other than the US where the game isn't called whatever Football would be in the local language).
Pizza: Pizza.
In general, just about anything the Japanese have imported from Europe or the Americas, they've taken the name from the English language. Notable exceptions include the Japanese word for bread(pan) being taken from Portuguese if I'm not mistaken, automobiles using the same word they used for man and beast pulled carts, and most western style clothing using the same terminology as traditional Japanese clothing. Even for things that have actual Japanese words, the english word is often just as valid(e.g. look up Cherry in a Japanese-English dictionary, and you'll get both Sakaranbo and Cheri).
That said, the Japanese do like to throw in random English words in their music and I'm not sure they ever use Romaji in their own media seriously.

Tumblr is pretty awful.
Not sure why anyone even bothers with it unless they like watching the drama it brings into their life. That, or they love being a part of/causing the drama itself. I kinda see it as the site people use when they like nice drawings and nasty arguments.

Another word that japan has taken straight from the US because I'm such a huge wrestling fan/mark is "puroresu" (Pro Wrestle, short for Professional Wrestling).
Also since we're talking about Tumblr at this point everybody on my dashboard has pretty much left so it mainly consists of some dorky wrestling friends and lots of anime girl stuff.

Re: It's been five days
I miss tumblr for the art, nothing more. The ridiculous levels of drama it brings as well as the totally misguided and jaw-dropping double standards many of its viewers like to uphold in regards to some of their views (not to mention how touchy they are about them combined with how anyone that disagrees is shown a shocking lack of tolerance) are absolutely unbelievable and what drove me from the site in the first place.
I do wonder whether the place has changed since I left, though I'm not going to return and find out.
Anime is alright, I guess. I've come down from it, though I like the general style of anime I don't really like anime much anymore. I only ever watch it with my friend Neppy, but I remember at least seeing Uni post in FG&C once saying that I loved it. I can't blame her since I did used to like it though. Fun facts, I guess. Thanks for subscribing to my blog.

To chime in, I would say that you can hardly blame him for taking up arms with what you said. You said "On the flipside, Japan now has copious amounts of random English lying around, and from my understanding, just to look flashy.". This does imply that you were following on from Xeno's post discussing the creation of anime, and thus you were indirectly implying that the random English usage was more recent. I'm not saying it's a point worth arguing over, but while you didn't directly state it was new, you definitely implied it was a more recent development.chaoadventures wrote:Once again, misinterpretation. Re: It's been five days
Aren't Facebook, Twitter, and all the other mega-social sites also full of people making fools of themselves and making more level-headed people question their faith in humanity? Granted, not everyone on modern social media is a raving lunatic, but the signal-to-noise ratio is certainly low enough to make me prefer the more old-fashioned social media such as forums where the community is small enough for mods to deal with trouble makers and the bulk of the user base has a common interest.
As for why saner users might stay on Tumblr: Personal Websites and Blogs never really go out of style, though the services to host them do. Cesspool of human culture aside, Tumblr is currently the go to host for blogs, and will likely remain so until something else gains enough momentum to replace it. When you have your blog hosted on Tumblr, you don't have to deal with installing a content management system on your own webspace or needing to know enough about HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. to build your pages from scratch, and you're pretty much guaranteed to not only be indexed by Google and other major search engines, but to show up fairly high in search results unless someone adds -site:tumblr.com to their search terms. BS that you find almost anywhere online with enough users aside, Tumblr is probably the easiest and cheapest way to get your thoughts out there and have a decent chance of someone actually reading them.

Re: It's been five days
I kept thinking about this topic and I'm glad it progressed so far.
I wanted to mention that Japan can be eager to incorporate foreign words, to the extent that they created an entirely separate set of characters for it. They have hiragana for native words and katakana for foreign words. They've even taken other words, like how they use "pan" for "bread" which is Portuguese.
But the flashy bit isn't exclusively something they do. Many individuals use foreign concepts to sound well-traveled and thus knowledgeable. It has resulted in most cultures having loan words for more unique terms. It just stands out more when you speak a language and notice it incorporated in something foreign.
Also, a fun fact that I didn't know until more recently, Star Wars is surprisingly big in Japan, at least with nerdy types. I saw some compilation animations from the 80s that showed Star Wars characters. And some have argued that Japanese animation wouldn't have gone in the direction it did if it weren't for the early successes of Disney.
I'm not really concerned about the argument anymore and I'm more amused by the discussion of English stuff in Japan.
