united states disgusting political topic autumn 2016

Post by Tsui »

the topic for watching it all go down

RULES:
  • no insults. I don't care if you think user xyz is the literal devil. be civil.

anyway, personally I just wanted to remind people that
Spoiler:
you can 100% totally ask for help with the voting process/machines if you're disabled! having someone walk you through it can make it a lot less stressful if you have anxiety, etc. there should be instructions available but if you can't process it then there should be people around that can help you.

My main advice is to focus on local government! While we talk a lot about the presidential election, the public actually has no guaranteed control over who is president. The Electoral College determines president, and it is a nightmarish game. There's no telling what will happen, which is why the popular vote doesn't always match.

Focus on local government, or even your federal representatives. That will impact your life much more than who you vote for president. The presidential election is just fireworks.

Agreed very much with Crazo. President is the only federally elected post, so of course the news networks put so much emphasis on it. But sadly, votes for president hardly even matter unless you are in a swing state (I am from California, Clinton will win here and much of the northeast, Trump will win much of the midwest, it really comes down to places like Florida, Iowa, New Mexico, some others.)

But local, state, and even national representatives are huge deal! Except many many people do not take the time to look at the candidates, hence the incumbent usually wins and we end up with a tragically small Congress approval rate. Researching propositions is also very important (although, sadly, reading and understanding the full text is really beyond me and not easy.) Look at who supports it, read arguments for and against, etc.

Anyway, I sent in my vote by mail on Friday.

Also a good point, about seeking help. 2000 election Florida really made things weird with rampant misunderstanding of the ballots. Also, the polling place must allow all people in the line past the closing time to finish their vote.

Officially the president is not determined until the delegates vote at the electoral college (which is in December I think.) The results we all see tonight are based on news organizations doing exit polling and such, which is not official. That being said, news organizations have it down to being accurate and timely unless it is a very very close race. So, the closer the election is, the later we will find out. But it should be apparent at some point tonight.

i voted early months ago via absentee since i'm physically disabled so today was pretty stress free

i can't wait for the manchild meltdown later when trump and the moronic third party candidates get officially crushed... i mean, insert disingenuous, ineffectual neutrality and centrism fresh off network tv and sprinkled with false equivalence here

we wouldn't want controversial objectivity getting in the way of 24 hour election coverage or pretending all opinions are academic enough to deserve being taken seriously

I voted Jill Stein for president. I know she doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning, but hopefully She and Johnson can get the five percent they need to win their parties Federal Funding in 2020 and Congress will remain deadlocked enough to prevent the next president from doing anything too outrageous.

In other news, I voted against an incumbent Senator and voted mainly a mixed Libertarian/Democrat ticket. It's damn near impossible to adequately research every candidate for every office one can vote for, but I can at least agree with most Libertarians on most social issues, and democrats tend to only be just inside the Authoritarian Right quadrant of the political compass instead of way in the corner like most Republicans.

I'm actually surprised people think this is gonna be an easy Clinton win.

I mean that's exactly what was said during the nomination and look where we are now haha.

I'd like to remind anyone that has the odd idea that this is definitely going to be a landslide in Hillary's favour that the notion of us being dumb enough to vote to leave the EU was considered laughable in the run-up to our referendum.

Don't let hubris cloud your vision. If you're in any way not supporting Donald Trump, you should be anxiously waiting for the result because it is by no means is a guarantee either way. I'm not even American and I'm legitimately worried about this election. We're in a post-truth era and people will lap the rubbish spewing from Trump's mouth right up, even though the entire rest of the world is all saying "this is a dumb idea. do not do this". The parallels here to what happened to us with Brexit are probably the reason for me being so worried. Trump is basically America's Nigel Farage, vying for a spot at being one of the most powerful and influential men in the world - which is far worse than anything Farage ever hoped to attain.

God I hope I'm wrong and this is a Hillary landslide.

This has just been... exhausting. Like, regardless of your political affiliations, I think we can all agree that the constant fighting and bickering has been tiring. I voted for Clinton, because although Connecticut has never really influenced anything ever, not like I had anything better to do today.

This is the most relaxing election I've witnessed since I started following them in '08. Neither of the candidates is good so there is close to no emotional investment.

For the record, I voted for the evil professor Dr. Stein.

Well, it's looking like a lock-in for Trump at this point. Actual US President Donald Trump.

If Hillary doesn't take basically everything, it's over.

I didn't want to post anything because I'm completely neutral, but I'm so absolutely sick of **** like this.

People are threatening to kill themselves or other people if Trump wins. People are threatening murder and/or suicide. If Trump becomes President.

Do any of you realize how much power a president actually has over laws and the state? Almost none. If Trump wins we're not going to turn into Cold War Russia, Mexicans aren't going to be deported or forced to build a wall, very little of our life will actually change.

Stop being overdramatic and believing everything Tumblr tells you. Seriously, all tonight has been is ****** posts about how Trump will end the world, how people are planning on moving to Canada to escape his "Evil Grasp" or whatever, how people straight up want to kill themselves they're so worried over this. Stop. Research before you assume stupid **** like this. Trump isn't some supervillain evil communist dictator bent on bending the united states to his very whim. He's an actor who's good at playing a deranged lunatic who wanted to see if he could run the state. I doubt Trump would even get minor bils past the senate (assuming that he would actually try to, which I highly doubt because, again, HE'S AN ACTOR).

You can vote for whoever you want, they certainly aren't good candidates and I wish Obama could get another 4 years somehow, but people blow stupid **** like this out of proportion so much, its so irritating.

People are killing themselves and eachother over this topic. Did you really think a forum full of naive teenagers and young adults that go on Tumblr, where everything is an extremist point of view, would be civil about it? I'm honestly surprised it hasn't turned into a flamewar yet.

Trump will get to appoint at least one, if not more, Supreme Court Justices, which last much longer than 4-8 years. Additionally, it is looking like the Senate and House will both be Republican, so he will be able to enact many more laws than otherwise. Granted, even many establishment Republicans are not fully on board with him, so hopefully that can stop some of the more ridiculous things.

And beyond political effects, it also has something to say about the people of the United States. They elected him. That concerns me more than a Trump presidency.

Honestly you're the most naive sounding person in this topic. Many people, I'd say most, realize that the president has little control over policy, but it seems like you haven't even really followed the election.

It looks very strongly like Trump will win
Democrats lost the house
The senate is still looking split
We have an empty justice spot and a justice who is 83 years old.

So yea, while he isn't control of policy, it doesn't seem like he will have too much contention in his attempts. Will he build his wall? probably not. Are people overreacting? yeah. Are you really coming across as informed even though you feel comfortable telling other people they aren't? **** no. Anyone with a basic understanding of checks and balances should be able to see that with the judicial, legislative, and executive branches are all stacked.

Plus, he acts as our chief ambassador and diplomat, and I don't trust his temperament. Foreigm policy is a very touchy subject, and it doesn't seem like he's in a position to excel at it.
