E3 2017: EA Withdraws from the Gaming Agreement

Post by Chaos the Light Chao »

What is E3, you ask?
The Electronics Entertainment Expo! Every June, the big video games companies (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft, and previously EA) hold an event where they show off what they're making. A whole lot of other guys have stuff too, but the four here host streamed conferences with trailers and talks. Traditionally, there has been some pretty questionable decisions, but last year they cleaned up, for the most part. If you take the event seriously, this is great. If.

The usual yearly games - COD, Battlefield, Far Cry, etc. - are always revealed there, and usually, some new IPs are shown as well. More gameplay from already announced yet unreleased titles (God of War, Super Mario Odyssey) are a given. This year, Microsoft is showing off their 4K Xbone, the Scorpio.

Why does this need to be a thread?
Firstly, anytime something even remotely hyped is something, we on the Internet will want to yell about it. Secondly, for posterity, of course! You can come back at any time to see how people's initial reactions compare to the games when they do come out. For an example of this, click the above gif.

So come on down and have yourself a speculation of what there'll be.

Update: EA in. Schedule:

My biggest hope right now in Nintendo world is Sm4sh for Switch at least hinted at, if not outright confirmed. It's all I need to sell my (recently purchased) Wii U and Sm4sh copy ASAP and upgrade.

I don't know if I'll watch the presentations themselves, I'm passed that kind of patience and could always just listen to how people like Jim Sterling and Totalbiscuit react, but I do have fond memories of watching them on Spike TV/G4 7 or 8 years ago for the experience alone.

My original post still holds up and has already been linked to.

All I can say is that anything I could ask for this time is stuff like a Kingdom Hearts 3 release date, and something like a new Mega Man game or a Metroid game.

Basically stuff that won't happen. And I'll watch it anyways.

Even if I could see well enough to play games, I haven't cared much for E3 in many years.

The Scorpio is actually the Xbox One X.

Image

get it because if you add an x to the front of box you get xbox

Several things were unveiled, but I didn't watch it because I neglected to check the time it started, so the only thing I checked out was the new Dragon Ball fighting game.

Image

It's being made by Arc System Works, so it's not doomed to either instant neglect (Extreme Butoden, Budokai 3) or being bad overall (Tenkachi, Taiketsu).

That said, there's a very high chance of it being a game I don't like the control scheme or input method of so I'm not excited or anything, just lightly interested.

DB Fighter Z looks good, but I expect it to have a disappointingly small roster.

Well to be fair, any roster under 25 will feel small considering how big the Dragon Ball Universe was before Super, and especially now after.

do you actually want to fight as a saibaman or cell jr. or cui

Yes, the roster will probably be small, but if they actually made it bigger we'd either have the problem Tenkachi had where everyone is the exact same, or the way Budokai did it where they
just give a bunch of characters the same attack (in name or otherwise) to reduce effort on that part.

That said, they'll probably do that thing where the only Ginyu Force members are Recoome (if we're lucky) and Ginyu.

These new cynical pessimistic colours really don't suit you.

I'd rather have a balanced fighting game with ~10-20 completely unique characters than a cluster**** of characters with slightly different animations for their universal combo and a different coloured Kamehameha for their ultimate. If you want a giant roster and aren't concerned about the combat on a mechanical level, play the TEnkaichi series, the last game has so many characters, you can literally play through the entirety of GT and original Dragon Ball without any missing characters besides Young Krillin.

I just want Vegeta armor Goku or different color palettes entirely instead of Goku's five different Orange Gi's with a slightly different Kanji.

DFZ looks DOPE. I don't mind if it's small, but I'm really hoping it's not pathetically small. I counted around 8 or 10 characters shown in the trailer assuming that different forms count as different characters, which is a very tiny amount. Here's hoping more info is released.

It's an arcsys game so most people will quit within the first week because it's too hard for them.

The Cell Juniors are genuinely one of my favourite species in Dragon Ball, to the point where one of my OCs is a Cell Junior that rebelled against Cell.

I take it Skullgirls isn't included since it draws inspiration from western cartoons?

On the subject of "too hard to play", man do I have a rant about this.

You have people playing high levels of play at a tournament, and being banished from this website for about two years made me go on a journey to learn more about the world.

I learned most people hate fighting games online mode because they usually wind up paired against someone of a higher skill caliber that dominates them completely for not having the motor skills to be able to play it. I mean you can't exactly say they shouldn't play it, they bought the game, but this kind of nature of fighting games is why they release them a lot.

Skullgirls is a distinctly Western-produced game so i don't see why it would be included

That and input delay due to online lag is literal death for fighting games. Skullgirls is so far the best online fighting game because its connections are always very strong.

I geninely don't know what you mean by this. Do you mean to say "Fighting games with poor online is why they release more fighting games"? I genuinely can't understand what you're saying, but fighting games becoming more popular and mainstream (see EVO which is getting very close to having more viewers than national sports every year) is a big part in why there are so many being released.

"I geninely don't know what you mean by this."

I mean to say that people with experience playing fighting game overwhelm people who want to get into them. Far be it from me to think something like that is an issue that needs to be solved I want to say before I continue.

Game comes out, new player buys it, they play online, they get pubstomped, interest rapidly declines from people who could be a new market, release an updated game with a new roster and repeat the process.

"but fighting games becoming more popular and mainstream (see EVO which is getting very close to having more viewers than national sports every year) is a big part in why there are so many being released."

They're being viewed more, not played more. If I recall a certain imageboard made the observation that there are more people funposting about super smash bros melee than there are people who actually play it.

I wasn't being sarcastic, I just literally couldn't understand what you were saying, it was phrased very weird.

Honestly, it's not that bad. I think it's more of an issue with games becoming much more online-focused than anything. I tried Skullgirls online once after playing story mode a few times, the first game I literally got infinite combo'd to death twice without even getting a hit in and immediately turned it off, yes, and that's a common experience, but at the same time, I have a group of friends that aren't competitive in the least bit and like playing games together, and even though I've literally never played Tekken before, I had a blast playing a few rounds with them. Online is all about winning, padding out imaginary numbers that mean nothing but Ego, against people you don't know and probably won't ever even interact with again, but hanging out with friends and playing a few rounds is always a good time, there's a much more casual (but also much more hype) air to the proceedings.
Triert wrote:Game comes out, new player buys it, they play online, they get pubstomped, interest rapidly declines from people who could be a new market, release an updated game with a new roster and repeat the process.

That's more money than anything. See Capcom's SFV for a good example. It's not enough to make the initial sale, DLC is basically guaranteed, and the way Capcom handles it is probably one of the poorest. SFV released with nothing but online play originally. No Arcade, no Story. It was like paying full retail price for Project M.

That's because Melee is in itself a fighting game community ****post. The Smash Bros series is a party game, and actual fighting game players don't take competitive melee players seriously anyways. I play Sm4sh competitively and have been to 3 tourneys, and the amount of imbalance, cheap tactics, and unfun that can result from the tourney bracket matches is eons ahead of actual communities like the FGC and speedrunners, but playing 5 or 10 friendlies with a person you just met is always fun. It doesn't help that competitive Smash players take themselves way too seriously.

Image

Also, being viewed more in and of itself implies more interest and therefore more purchases in the longterm. We've got a shitload of new and good fighting games coming out after the drought of pure crap and Season Passes that was SFV and MK10. I think the FGC will be just fine, and I fully support it becoming a global phenomenon instead of a social stigma. Sure, the learning curve is pretty big, especially for the upcoming fighting game releases, but they can still be enjoyed by people of any age and will always be a LAN party/video game playing friends get-together mainstay

Melee and S4 are two completely different games. I think the main problem here is just you suck at smash.
