One question. Does this rule also affect the chatbox?

If you really are suicidal, then instead of posting it as a topic, look for people who care and PM them about it and talk to them for advice. Suicide is not a light topic, and i don't think people should be talking about it here for everyone to see because chances are there;s people on here who will LAUGH at you for being suicidal. and THOSE people are just jerks who need to find something elkse to laugh at. :darkblah:

This is supposed to be about chao, and chao are happy creatures, so it'd be depressing and out of cHao spirit to post such dark topics. Not trying to offend Suicidals, i'm betting all you guys are naturally nice and just need some comfort, But hows about we all kjeep this place cheery and happy?

Suicide notes are wrong. They make others miserable, and this is still a kids site.

But if people REALLY need help, they should get comfort, just they should PM someone instead of making a thread about it

That is something personal and I agree it should not be mentioned anywhere except in PM or something private.

No, no, the reason that someone would post "I'm going to commit suicide" or something of the sort is because they want to let people know that they won't be active anymore. You may say, "Well, we already have a topic for that; they could just say 'I'm leaving,'" but what if they wanted to tell everybody not to PM them for anything, or even e-mail them or talk to them on the phone? Surely their friends would want to know the reason behind it. Not everybody looks in the "I'm Leaving" topic.
You can see I have considered suicide. I have, at least ten times.

um well
if someone was committing suicide
they probably wouldn't care about getting warned for it, because they might be dead or just really too sad to care

I think you people need to be a little lighter on suicide.
It's a fragile subject and you're all manhandling it. ...lol

And sucide has no place at Chao Island, whatsoever.
It isn't something to tell your online friends about. It's kind of hard to help someone over the internet, and since you have no control over it it's especially hard to cope with someone "leaving".

Good point abourt posting it on CHao Island. Buit if people are infact suicidal, sometimes people can help over the internet by telling them they have things to live for.

Well if you have a friend online and you don't really have anyone else to turn to then well I guess but I mean I just think it's a bad idea to talk about suicide to a bunch of strangers on the internet that ccan be someone else you don't know you don't they could be 40 yr old men that are looking for a suicidal kid you never know I mean that's what the world has been coming to....

Yeah. People online can be more sympothetic and empathetic simply because they don't have the akwardness of talking to you face-to-face. It can also be more comfortable for people to sayt they're depressed or suicidal online, depending on who is the alternative to talk to in real life. :darksway: You never know.

I apologize for bringing this thread back to life after a month of inactivity. However, this topic really piqued my interest and got me to sign back on to CI after a year. So, here are my two cents. As someone who has been diagnosed with major depression, I understand what it feels like to be suicidal and it is definitely one of the worst feelings a person can have. So, I am troubled and disappointed to see how insensitively the topic has been handled in this thread (in general. I'm not trying to point fingers at anyone.) I don't disagree that suicide notes are inappropriate. In fact, I don't think that publicly publishing these sentiments on the World Wide Web is an appropriate behavior unless it's on a forum specifically made to lend support to people facing suicidal thoughts. But, I don't think this for all of the reasons people have stated.

Namely, I am concerned that people have implied that:
1. The people posting these topics are selfish, sympathy seeking, rude, etc;
2. People with suicidal thoughts are lumped into some miscellaneous category of human beings that cannot be understood and are in a class all their own.

Yeah, people over exaggerate and cry that they want to kill themselves over some trivial issue and that is unfortunate. It is really serious for someone to say that and actually not mean it, but it is also serious for everyone else to just assume that these sorts of posts are illegitimate threats. Because, people actually have killed themselves over generally insignificant matters and it is dangerous to have any sort of reaction that might exacerbate that person's self destructive intents. Making jokes in light of suicide is an example of a negative reaction, in my opinion. As for my second point, it is difficult to relate to suicidal people if you yourself have never felt that way, but everyone is still a person no matter what their problem is and you have the potential to feel what they feel. From personal experience- being suicidal is one of the scariest feelings. I felt so worthless and emotionally drained that I thought nobody loved me, that if I dropped dead no one would notice or care. It felt like my whole world was collapsing around me and that I didn't deserve to be here.

So for both ends of the issue- this is nothing to joke about. Don't make life harder for the people who are suffering by joking about suicide, even if it's to make you feel less uncomfortable. And don't claim to be suicidal if you really aren't because then you’re just trivializing the real pain people like me have felt and are feeling.

But really, for anyone reading this who has suicidal thoughts: don’t post your troubles on forums, especially forums like CI that are meant to be fun and upbeat. Specifically the second part because introducing negativity into a positive environment can upset the mood of the community and aggravate people. But in general, it isn’t productive to talk about this with total strangers on the internet because at the end of the day, they don’t know you and most of them can’t care enough about you to give you the help you really need because it is so hard to care about an anonymous person who is probably far away. And while most forum members will try to be sympathetic, it is only natural for them to feel uncomfortable and unable to help you. Instead, find a support community, call a hotline and get some help for yourself. Get yourself a therapist who will help you recover and if you are a student, talk to the school counselor who can help you feel better and explain to your parents that you need help. Don’t rely solely on the internet for help, as most of us aren’t qualified to completely help you. *hugs*

And sorry, this really isn't something that I can tl;dr ):

Why would someone need to say they are suicidal if they're ignored? I write, in the chatbox, that I died, but noone does anything. The only person who replies is Midnight.
I wish Lindsay was an Otaku too.

It's been a real problem over the years with people in the chatbox inciting arguments over suicide and depression (often one side saying they are suicidal or depressed in order to justify their actions in said argument)

I know this may sound rather mean, but please do not use the topic of suicide or depression to cause or prolong drama in the chatbox.
You can still ask for genuine advice in private, but we're not professionals here. :chaocry:

If you are geniunely comtemplating suicide or are depressed, these websites have people who will offer you really good support:
