There technically are reasons for it... albeit unofficial ones as of yet. Until the game comes out and gives us a reason for it to be the X/Y chromasomes, I'm going to consider them theories at best. And if it's because of the Axis thing... Just call it Pokemon in 3D A and Pokemon in 3D B and get it over with.

Most people I spoke with had the first thought of chromosomes as well. To clarify (not to PinkIceFox, just in general) even though X and Y are used in gender determination, it is not that X is female and Y is male. X is crucial to all humans, Y is the maleness chromosome, and lack of it (in the form of another X, or even more X's) makes female. Not that Nintendo would care, if gender was there intent. It may be a reference to dimensions, (or maybe both that and gender, duuude...) but that means the third game can be Z (which will have a snake or something legendary starting with "Z") and if we are very lucky a fourth game may be made as Pokemon W. For the 4DS.

Anyway, my actual opinion: I have no idea. It is much too soon, and I think a poor choice on Nintendo's part. Either way, I will probably buy it, since I think the gameplay will be good. The X mascot should be standing with its legs apart in some picture, to make it more clear as an X.
The starters are okay. I have no idea what the Grass thing is. Everyone is praising the fire one, yet no one has commented on the fact that Fire Fox has already existed (Vulpix, Ninetales, anyone?) Water one could be possibly good, but I am not a fan of frog pokemon.
The battles look very good though.

Well, given that Japan has had G5 since September 2010, it will have been a full three years, going on four. Because localization was slow by six months for G5, it only seems soon for everyone else. The fact Nintendo is actually not dragging their translation feet this time is surprising.

I am thinking from the standpoint not of Gen V, but of B2/W2. They were taking a different route with making the story of Gen V two parts, and therefore more time between that and Gen VI would make more sense.

I disagree. Considering how long Black and White have been out and it's entirely possible that they were working on Pokemon X and Y on the side, I think their timing is fine.

I don't think anyone forgot about Vulpix and Ninetales (especially not PIF). Everyone is raving about Fennekin because they like their design and no one really cares that much about the similarities.

Looking at screenshots from the video. Trying to get a nice look at the character I'm going to be playing as.

I love her design. It's hard to really see what it is since she didn't get a closeup like the boy did, but her hat reminds me of Leaf's. Clothes are a longer red pleated skirt and a black top. Also sunglasses on her hat. This outfit is adorable and I love it so much. Also what looks like black knee high boots. Aiiieeee boots~

Basically I love her because she looks exactly like how I would design a character.

I like that her hair is brown. I have brown hair so it makes me connect to my character better (I suddenly realize why IV is my least favorite generation). And it's really long and awesome and not in a stupid style. *glances at Rosa* This is probably my favorite design so far. As for the male hero... he looks a lot like Hilbert with straighter hair (also Egoraptor), which I find very uncreative and sorta lame on their part (except the Egoraptor bit that is awesome).

I don't really care for the female PC all that much. It's cute but doesn't make me that interested. I would prefer to see customization options for the protagonists even though that probably won't happen for a long time if at all. Not necessarily clothes but at least skin, eye, and hair color. Maybe even eye shape too.

customization options

Pink and I were actually talking to each other about this yesterday. I can't think of a good reason to not implement such a feature besides laziness (and considering Game Freak is the developer, is probably the only reason, because Pokemon is a cash cow despite what amount of innovation actually goes into the series). Because I seldom see worthwhile change to the series, the new little things are what sell me the games. I think it sounds nifty.
