The Nincada line

Post by Jack Augustine »

Yep, three Pokemon.

Nincada evolves into Ninjask, usually, at lv20. But not everyone knows of the secret evolution, Shedinja.

Just for those who're new to Pokemon like I was, Shedinja is created like a "failed" duplicate; Same EV spread, same IVs, movepool. At Nincada's level 20, if there is an extra space in your party and you have a standard Pokeball (as of G6) on hand, Shedinja's formed alongside Ninjask. The evolution screen won't show it though.

Speaking of, Shedinja's weird. The Defensive stats (both of them) are worthless, even though neither of them are at 1. Wonder Guard's the only thing keeping it alive, if Fire, Flying, Ghost, Dark, or Rock type moves aren't used against it.

Why Wonder Guard? Why not Sturdy?

Sturdy would keep it from dying obviously while Wonderguard would let the right pokemon puncture it.

However, Sandstorm, and other entry hazards do the trick against it just fine.

Not to mention that being a 1 hit point wonder and having and ability that renders it immune to most direct attacks has been Shedninda's gimmick since it was first introduced.

With the R/s remakes coming soon and it being the same generation I started on, talking about Shedninja like this feels like I'm looking at an old mirror that I can still see my young self in.

Shedinja is also, worth mentioning, the a reference to bugs that shed skin. Shedinja is nothing but shed skin that's left from Nincada evolving.

Shedinja is a fun pokemon, because if the opponent doesn't have anything against it, they're boned.

Not to mention that this is why Shedinja shouldn't get sturdy.

Well, to that, in Amie I was initially confused as to why it wouldn't eat my Pokepuff before I realized; it can't eat it. It's just a husk filled with a black void of anger (So I've heard).

I like that attention to detail.

just to add on, the reason it has that hole in its back is because that's where the ninjask would have crawled out of its old exoskeleton

shedinja is my favorite pokemon it's so cool and weird and the pokedex entries are great ("Peering into the crack on its back is said to steal one's spirit")

plus the design is great

I also got it completely accidentally on my first sapphire playthrough which was the most confusing and hilarious experience i've had in a pokemon game

shedinja was the only pokemon to have wonder guard, making it a secret, gimmicky nerd with 5 weaknesses and insta-dies to indirect damage

sturdy on shedinja would mean it'd only ever die from indirect damage, as it's 1 hp would make it invincible to direct damage

plus, sturdy wasn't what it is now in gen 3 (back then it only negated 1-hit k.o. moves)
used to be eevee chao

like to pop in every once in a while :)

Shedinja is actually a big joke, because:

Shedinja givs you 2 HP EV points when you faint it.

It gets Rest and Substitute, moves that won't ever work for Shedinja.

And finally, it gets Double-edge, which instantly kills you and Final gambit, which would only do 1 HP damage and faint your Shedinja in the process.

^How many of those can Shedinja learn directly and aren't just leftovers from Nincada? For that matter, how many Pokemon have no moves among their possible learnsets that wouldn't be completely out of place in a serious battle? I doubt Shedinja is the only mon to learn a move with recoil whose too fragile to make good use of it.

They aren't exactly moves he can directly learn indeed, but he's able to get them even though they are completely useless to plain suicide for Shedinja.

Rest is through TM

Substitute is through TM

Double-edge is through move tutors from the Gen I remakes (the most useful one is the hardest to get)

Final gambit is an egg move.

I'm not the one to talk to about EVs and IVs. Try talking to other people.

Not Nacho either she doesn't understand 'em.

It's a pretty cool idea but it's completely useless against any smart trainer, as most trainers these days run at least one hazard setter or one poison/burn star.

I tried to get it back when I was playing through X/Y but didn't realize it needed a plain ol' Poke ball.
