Aka, you can call bw2 a third game, but you can't call third games a sequel.
...I think you got that first part backwards. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

That aside, though, I agree. B2/W2 are basically the "third games" of their generation, in the form of sequels, but the other third games are not sequels. B2/W2 had a completely new story that took place after the original Black/White. They are a new experience.
The other third games did have some new content, but still followed the same general plot as the original two versions from what I've come to understand. It's basically like an upgrade of sorts to the original versions, or like if you had to buy a separate copy of a game full-price in order to play DLC. That's why B2/W2 are the only third versions I bothered to get...

Yeah I went over it in my head at least 6 times and still wrote it out wrong. Classic Nano.

@Pink

Here's how you're wrong

Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum aren't sequel's for the same reason FireRed and LeafGreen aren't sequels to pokemon Red and Blue and green. They're remastered games.

Is Gold and Silver a sequel to Red and Blue? Yes, is UltraSun and UltraMoon a sequel to Sun and Moon? No, they outright say it'll have an alternate story. That means unless we hear about Lillie coming back from Kanto, Gladion still walking around as acting president, they're not sequel's at all.

Under the definition of sequel that was posted earlier, a sequel either continues the story or develops the theme. I'm saying its a sequel not in a linear story but a sequel in the sense that it further develops the theme of Sun and Moon. This is how most third games work as well, which I also would consider a sequel, and what the remakes do, which I would consider a sequel. Especially for a remake like ORAS to RSE, which fully develops the themes present in the original RSE that couldn't be realized on GBA hardware.

I'd argue JP Blue, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum more closely resemble expansion packs or DLC for their corresponding paired versions. Except GameFreak/Nintendo force you to rebuy the base games and start a new game to see the new content(though, admittedly, prior to XY, Pokemon was on a system that could only handle Disc-locked DLC, and prior to DP, had no convenient means of triggering on-disc DLC). Hell, JP Blue was little more than a bugfix release(it tweaked wild encounter rates, in-game trades, and had some graphical upgrades, but was easily the least impressive third version though it did become the base for US Red/Blue)

Only time will tell if the Ultra Versions are just slightly enhanced rereleases of the base games, proper storyline sequels ala BW2, or something else entirely. Regardless, I doubt they'll be anything that couldn't have been DLC for Sun and Moon even if some of the new stuff would require adding a New Game+ feature.

ahahaha

...

WHY IS THIS STILL ON THE 3DS

Seriously, have you guys been in a Double Battle or the Battle Royal before? Even using Tauros in certain sections Hau'oli (with a non-"New" 3DS)? The frame rate drops like a boulder.

anyways I can't wait for diamond and pearl remakes on the switch that will make me sad that it's probably what the switch is getting instead

its on 3ds because the game was being made on 3ds before making the switch, pun intended.
