The action of having hot goo smeared across his face seemed to rouse the slumbering giant. His eyelids parted, yellow orbs rolling in their sockets as he attempted to gain bearing on his location. "Lesssssa?" He slurred, realizing she was carrying him over her shoulder-- a mighty feat indeed, and one that stirred a quiver in the base of his skull. "You're a forward lass," he chortled, construing her intent by taking him to his chambers.

--

The hero-fly chao was not one often driven to angry emotions, but Quartz' words struck a nerve. "My friends ((AKA DERPSQUAD)) are far from helpless, Quartz," she spoke without malice but her voice still held firmness as she defended the chao she'd grown up with. "Facing adversity only requires strength of the heart. And there's nothing they have more of." She turned from him then, feeling a little embarrassed she'd gotten swept up in the moment enough to almost raise her voice against her former boychao. This whole disaster... it had her on edge; a hot prickle formed in her eyes.

--

Rascal pushed himself awkwardly upright, dragging the back of his arm across his nose where some dirt had been smudged. Now that Spike had returned as he’d said he would, it meant they could be off, and he could think of no place he more wished to be than back in his own home. He spoke up softly, “It’s late and aways back to the beach, I think I ought to be going--”

--

Kinto Q stared at the ornate wooden ceiling above his bed, eyes unblinking. He barely registered the two girl chao reclined to either side of him, drawing circles on his chest. In his mind he was replaying every step, every punch, every motion of his battle with the beast, searching for some gap, some weakness, some vulnerability he had perhaps failed to take advantage of, that would have better tipped the scales in his success.

He could find none.

“You’re distracted, Master…” Izzy whined. Her sister nodded in ample agreement, pout upon her lips.

He took a long while to come from his thoughts and form reply. “You are observant. I fear I am unable to enjoy your comforts this eve.”

“Oh, but let us try!” Lizzy urged, pushing out her breast and hugging his arm to it.

“It is of no use,” Kinto Q spoke decisively, pulling his arm out of her grasp and sitting up, eliciting a little gasp from Lizzy (they were not often rejected in such manner). He rose from his bed.

“But we only wish to please you, as you so please us…!” Izzy tried in her sister’s stead, following the swimchao. She endeavored to wrap her arms around his midsection; Lizzy mimicked the action.

“Enough,” Kinto Q grit, feeling his irritation rise. “Be away from me.” When neither ceased their clutches at him, he pried the latter loose, shoving her to the ground. Lizzy landed with a small ‘oof!’, her emotiball becoming an exclamation in shock as she scuffed her knees on the carpet. Izzy gave a gasp and bent to her sister protectively. “Do not make me say it again,” Kinto Q warned, and Izzy helped her sibling to her feet so they could both flee from the room.

When the door had shut behind the two of them, Kinto Q allowed his true anger to well to the surface and take sway. He slammed his fists down on the vanity, causing the wood to crack. He bared his teeth at the damage. Pitiful. Weak in comparison to the awesome strength he had witnessed. He yelled, tearing the mirror from the wall to thrust it upon the floor, sending shards flying. He needed it. He needed it for his OWN.

"Mmm," Kaylessa chuckled. "Not a bad idea, now that you mention." As she opened Cue's door and flung him onto his bed, the night's festivities, and the exertion required to haul Cue to his room, caught up with her. An overwhelming wave of fatigue caught up with her, and she found her head hitting the pillow right next to Cue. "Cue d'ya mind if I just... Sleep... H--" The amethyst chao trailed off, already half-asleep.

As Jack walked from Dorian's door toward his own, he passed by Cue's, and couldn't stop himself from peering inside. Eyeing the scene before him, he decided the best course of action would be to close the door for them.

"Didn't see that one coming." He muttered to himself.

--

Quartz was taken aback, and while he played it off as nothing much, he almost dropped out of the sky. Struggling to fly properly again, he responded, "I, ahh, don't doubt their strength of heart. I just don't want them getting hurt -- or getting in the way." He acted assertive and opinionated as always, but truthfully, such conflict with Melody troubled him. It was too reminiscent of how they were just before they split up. For all his outward toughness, thinking of that break up pained him greatly. He remembered how cocky he was before then -- how he had grown so accustomed to the girl chao's company that he never thought she'd actually leave, even amongst his habitual verbal berating. Quartz had loved her and only wanted the best for her, and it had made him controlling.

Quartz knew, in his heart, that he still loved her. It had taken months of meditation and distance from the outside world to shape his pining into a manageable, dull pain, and it was already redeveloping into that all-too-familiar sharp pain. Were it not for his intense sense of justice, he thought, he surely would not have agreed to come along.

--

Chasm looked to Rascal, then to Peaches, then to Spike. She was tired, but unsure what to do or who to follow.

"Well," Spike said, pushing his chest out slightly, "I'd better head back to Station Square and follow Dash's lead. The chao in the city deserve to know what's going on."

Peaches grimaced. This daunting, restless task seemed like the right thing to do. She had spent much of her life carelessly pursuing hobbies, and now this? Just this morning she wouldn't have believed such carnage possible on Shimmering Island. It was her home, and it was peaceful. But now this -- whatever it is -- threatened not only their livelihood, but their very lives.

The orange chao looked to Chasm. Chasm was her best friend, and she cared deeply for her. She also knew the fly chao very well; Peaches knew Chasm was not about to risk herself, but would rather hole up and wait for the thing to blow over.

"I'll go with you." Peaches said finally. "Word of mouth may instill panic, but after this..." She motioned towards the dark smoke still rising to the sky, "Perhaps a bit of panic is necessary."

"Yes, well..." Chasm looked bashful.

"Don't worry about it." The orange chao said quickly. "You and Rascal take care, OK?"

Chasm looked even more embarrassed.

"Word to the wise," Spike announced. "Apparently this psycho takes prisoners, or kills you. One of the two. Also..." A whole host of information was flooding back to him quite suddenly, and he wondered what was most important to say first. "I saw this grey, chao-like monstrosity... It didn't look like a chao, but I don't know what else it would be, either." The lime green chao shook his head, not sure how to describe it. "It was fighting this Kinto Q guy, but it didn't seem benevolent either. It's still out here somewhere, so keep a look out."

"O-Okay." Chasm stammered slightly, but regained herself. She looked to Rascal. "Let's go to your place, then?"

“Not at all…” Cue spoke rumblingly, from the back of his throat. Gruffly he nuzzled his nose against hers, but his eyelids once again grew heavy, especially with his body in the horizontal position it was in now. Before he could get much farther, his mind yielded yet again to the lure of sleep, and his snores rattled the room.

--

Melody chose to say nothing to that, lapsing into quietude; nothing would be accomplished by their arguing. Quartz’ concern was well-placed, that she could not contest, but she would not bar her friends from fighting the good fight if it was their heart’s desire, even if it put them at risk. Quartz had once tried to shelter her in a similar way-- for her protection, because he cared for her. And though that was behind the two of them and they’d worked past it, it was obvious Quartz’ core values remained as they’d always been.

She turned her mind from it and returned course. “This is the place,” she whispered, angling her wings to initiate descent. Far off, the flames of the garden had been quelled, residual clouds of smoke still hanging above it in the night sky, blotting out the stars. She and Quartz touched down upon the road of the Mystic Jungle. With the thick foliage overhead it was difficult to make out many prints upon the ground, even with the full moon above.

--

Rascal opened his mouth to speak, but before he could even figure out what he was going to say, Peaches and Spike had both taken their leave. He gave a little cough into his left flipper and looked over at Chasm. “Um…” He knew the monotone black chao no longer had a home to return to for the evening, but he hadn’t expected she’d be suddenly ‘left in his care’, as it were. He knew the socially-acceptable thing to do was offer her the security of his own home, but somehow extending that graciousness made him a little uncomfortable, even though Chasm’s company was the least burdensome of the bunch. His toes wriggled in the dirt. "Yeah... alright."

Quartz mostly followed Melody's lead, since he didn't know exactly what to look for. "Maybe we should look at the garden proper, where the fight happened." He suggested.

--

As Spike and Peaches made their leave, Chasm heaved a sigh. She was exhausted, mentally and emotionally. "I hope you know the way. I have no idea where we are relative to the beach." She looked to Rascal.

Melody nodded to the other hero chao’s words, her eyes still searching the ground but to little avail. She turned toward the Normal Garden, keeping their pace reasonably quick but still gradual enough that they could investigate without worry of missing something were any evidence to pop up. Her expression turned to a frown when they arrived; crime scene police tape had been stung around the perimeter, tied to the few trees that hadn’t been scorched too badly in the fire. Dash and the others had warned her about the extent of the destruction, but she hadn’t been prepared to witness the aftermath first-hand. The hero fly bit her lip, biting back tears at the sight of her former birthplace; it would be many years before it could ever be the same.

--

The swim chao gave a little bob of his head. Truth was, he didn’t know precisely where he was, but his internal compass was reasonably accurate-- for whatever reason [[most likely the author decided on the spot that this would be a cool ability for his character to have]], he had an innate knowledge of the closest route to the sea, or any body of water. Like he’d done many times before, he would simply follow his nose and arrive home. Without so much as additional word, he set out, plodding west on his awkward flipper-like feet, not so unlike a penguin.

--

By 3:30AM, Dash had successfully notified sixteen of the major villages and gardens on Shimmering Island. The route he had taken, were it traced out on a map, most likely would’ve looked like one giant dot-to-dot puzzle. His feet throbbed underneath his weight; even a run chao could reach his limits, and though he was distinctly aware of all the smaller gardens he had not yet gotten word to, he knew he could not go on much longer and remain standing. He chuckled softly in spite of the soreness in his toes-- he could feel his run around the island from early that morning.

Huffing out a soft sigh of defeat, the monotone red chao found a soft place on the grass to lay his head. Tomorrow. Tomorrow he could resume. Melody and everyone else were counting on him. Melody…

It was the thought of her that was the last thing that crossed his mind before sleep took quick hold, and he was out like a light.

Quartz was not the sentimental type, but seeing his former home covered in scorch marks and police tape weighed heavily upon his heart. He felt a familiar and undesired wave of emotions -- righteous fury, indignation, frustration. These were feelings he worked hard to eliminate, to meditate away. The hero chao was frustrated at himself for so easily succumbing to such emotions.

Feeling these feelings is no sin, just don't let them control you. He told himself. He doubled down on investigating to try and distract himself from his pain and anger. Just as his mind began to wander again, something pulled him back to reality; he had found a small, metallic half-sphere of some sort. It looked like nothing he recognized, and as the power chao picked it up to investigate, he felt etchings on the outside of it. Some sort of symbol. Quartz couldn't help but laugh at himself softly. If he had been out in the real world instead of keeping exclusively to the Hero Garden, he might have some clue what this symbol was. Current events completely eluded him.

"Mel?" He said. "Err, Melody, any clue what this is?" He offered the semi-sphere to her with outstretched hand.

--

[[Dat ret-con tho]]

Chasm followed after Rascal in silence. She wanted to cry, but held back. The hero chao would not allow herself to be weak until she knew they were safe somewhere. She kept hearing distant howls and roars, and it kept her paranoid, but focused on the task at hand.

--

Spike and Peaches had little success in their mission. They found that the vast majority of residences were already mid-evacuation or else had already heard the news and decided to stay put. [[Hurricane Katrina in a nutshell]] They didn't need to use their imaginations too much -- almost all of them had already been given the news by "a fast and friendly red chao." Really, it was uncanny how many different chao chose to use those exact words to describe Dash, and it wasn't long before the duo had an inside joke on their hands.

Spike was like a tireless marauder, feeling intensely obligated to inform "at least as many people as Dash had." Peaches only got him to stop when she refused to keep going. The two settled down for the night amongst foliage just outside the city limits.

The familiar-yet-not-recently-used nickname caused a momentary sense of nostalgia; she didn't comment on it. Melody ran her non-existent fingers over the engraved symbol, its monogram eluding her as well. Doubtless this object was of significance; nothing like it was native to the area. It would have had to be manufactured from its design, which would trace its origin to the city. She shook her head. “No. But perhaps someone back in Station Square might.” Unfortunately, it was far too late in the evening to go around inquiring; such a task would have to wait until morning.

--

The aquamarine chao was oblivious to his surroundings, including the frightened demeanor of his traveling companion. Were it not for his wide, unblinking eyes, one might have mistaken him for sleep-walking. They made it out of the jungle and into the grasslands, which soon thinned into the drier scrub of the beach beyond, unharmed and unmolested by any of the night terrors Spike warned them of. At last his hut loomed in the distance, a sort-of squashed dome-like construction, built of large rocks smoothed by the pounding waves of the sea, various driftwood and a thatch of dried palm leaves. The sight of his dwelling brought instant tranquility to the chao.

Quartz thought for a moment.

"Hmm. Well, it's too late to do anything now. What do you suggest we do?"

--

Chasm was nearing her limit, but she tried to remain her usual friendly self. "Nice little place. You make it yourself?" Truthfully, she already knew the answer. Of course he had made it, or at least had a hand in its creation. She knew Rascal was no social expert, but when it came to conventional things, he was quite resourceful.

The girl chao was quiet a long moment. Then she swiveled, the breeze catching her purple headspikes and making them flutter like hair. “Let’s leave this place…” she whispered, stepping toward him, “and all our past behind us. If Kinto Q wants Shimmering Island, let him have it…” Her nose practically met his, wide soulful eyes staring back into his; her hand came up to caress his cheek, “All I need is you…”

Quartz’ heart was pounding; he felt his mouth come forward and lock on hers of its own passionate will, and he shut his eyes, savoring the intimate moment. His brow wrinkled as the sound of laughter caught on the periphery of his hearing range, growing louder by the second. He felt a cough well up in his chest and he couldn’t hold it back. Suddenly he realized he was on lying on his back… and he had vomited up blood when he’d coughed. He lifted an arm to investigate, only to find he was too weak to lift it, and his eyes drew up.

Standing over him was Kinto Q, his head thrown back, cackling maniacally. He held the hero chao’s entrails aloft in his claws from where they’d been torn out of his abdomen. Despair spiralled within him, vision fading around the edges and as he saw only black, he could still hear the evil chao’s wicked laugh…

A sharp breath drew him from his coma. Heart still thudding like a jackhammer, Quartz palmed his own body for the wound that had been there only moments before, but no longer. He was seated, cross-legged, on an emaculate marble floor, surrounded by pillars and statues… the Hero Garden.

“Troubling visions of the future?” a voice asked him, and he turned to see the Angelic Chaos chao that was the seer of the place. Her glowing halo bobbed above her head as she circled around and took a seat in front of him. “Let your mind be at ease. Return to your meditations. You must be strong if you are to succeed.” Quartz shut his eyes, listening to her soothing voice and directing her calmness inward to himself. He inhaled a deep breath through his nostrils, holding it a moment before letting it out through his mouth, then repeated, falling into trance. Upon his third breath, the putrid stench of rotting garbage filled his lungs and he wrenched open his eyes in disgust. The environment was dark… damp… dank, and the sound of buzzing flies was louder than it seemed possible for such small creatures.

“I don’t think this white powder stuff is for you, man,” a cracked voice said beside him and he looked over to see a red Dark Chaos chao who was leaned against the alleyway. Quartz’ nose burned; he drew his arm across his face, only to smear blood across it.

“What the %^&* is going on??” he exclaimed.

“Take it easy,” the other chao laughed. “Here.” Yellow eyes lighting up viciously, he lunged forward and before Quartz could defend himself, a dark sack had been thrown over his head.

It was suddenly removed; he blinked rapidly to get his eyes to readjust to the light-- it was so bright. In fact, everything seemed to be obscured… he could see the Normal Garden (not destroyed) before him, but it was like there was a weird film covering it. He reached out, only to have his hand meet solid form and he realized he was in a bubble. No, not a bubble, a cocoon! Quartz leapt to his feet and began to strike his fist against it. No no no, now wasn’t his time, this wasn’t supposed to be happening. The cocoon grew in opacity, the garden fading more and more from his vision. “LET ME OUT!” he screamed. “LET ME OUT!! MELOOODYYYYYY…!!”

And then, there was nothing.

[[Okay, I swear I'll write a real response in a moment... XD]]

--

REAL RESPONSE:

Melody pocketed the trinket, letting out a troubled exhale. “I think we’ll have to pick up where we left off come morning,” she said, not liking it, but acknowledging the two of them had done all they could, and trying to remind herself that they weren’t giving up empty-handed; they would find answers. She wet her lips. “Did you…” she began to ask, but didn’t know if she should vocalize the question because she didn’t know how Quartz would take it. “Did you want to stay the night?” she offered graciously, the implication being at her residence.

--

“Mostly,” the swim chao nodded as they traversed his sandy ‘front yard’. “I got a little help from your friend Peaches, actually. Some of the rocks that make up the base were too heavy for me to lift by hand, so she rigged me up some netting and a winch system.” He recalled the time he’d spent meticulously searching the ocean floor for just the right rocks, looping the rope net around them and using the crank to drag them up to the surface. It had been a significant portion of work, taking place over the course of nearly three weeks, but it had been worth every minute. Rascal stepped up and opened the door, realizing upon stepping halfway through it that he ought to hold it for his guest. He bumbled backward slightly and motioned, “A-after you.”

I ... well then. Nice hahahah

--

Truth be known, Quartz was fine with turning in for the night. He could keep going if he had to, but they had likely managed all they would so late into the night. "Sure, that'll be most convenient, so we can pick things right up in the morning." He said, trying to keep inevitable thoughts of ulterior motives out of mind. "Show me to your home."

--

Chasm nodded, forcing a small smile. "That sounds like Peaches." Normally, she would be more interested, but the exhaustion was overwhelming. She stepped through the threshold.

Rascal nodded. The massive urge to yawn and stretch overtook him and he reached his fins up over his head as he got on his tip-toes, eyes shutting as his mouth lengthened out. He rubbed at his head then. “Um…” He didn’t often have guests over, and didn’t know what to say to the black hero fly at this point, but getting some shut-eye was top on his list of priorities. He toddled over to his waterbed and crawled into it under the covers.

--

Dorian sat in the dining chamber, engrossed in a novel propped in his hand-- specifically [[The Idiot’s Guide to Being a Pompous Tool]] a collection of poetry by J. K. Williams. In his other hand was a delicate porcelain cup, filled with English breakfast tea. He lifted it to sip from it. The common room was quiet this morning; it was often sparsely populated this early, but it was decidedly moreso today, due no doubt to the party-throwing that had lasted long into the night before. A few of Kinto Q’s servants were still picking up and cleaning. Dorian had emerged around five-thirty AM to get breakfast-- two poached eggs and rye toast-- and had been there since, enjoying his literature. It had, however, crossed his mind once or twice what his stealthy drop-in from the evening previous might be up to.

Zack awoke very slowly. He was on a fairly tight schedule, as the slaves were his to command this morning. While he usually found this enjoyable, this time, the thought brought him little pleasure. Subjugating just wasn't fun after the initial conquest. The run chao felt powerful and dominating in the moment, but when he went to the servant's quarters (little more than over-glorified, decently-furnished holding cells), rising the whelps from their slumber was not at all gratifying. It felt like effort he'd rather shy away from. They knew he was powerful now, what more was there to be had? Sure, he would set them to doing chores about the base, and it would be useful, but the black-and-blue chao even wondered for a moment if it would be easier to just hire servants who would likely do a much better job anyway.

--

Jack had risen as early as possible. As a contract assassin, he was quite used to waking up at specific times using only his internal clock. He spent nearly an hour waiting outside Zack's door, hiding as best he could in a bit of indoor foliage and hoping that the young chao would not notice. To Jack's pleasure, Zack walked right past, clearly mentally preoccupied. The two-tone purple rushed through the threshold as quickly as possible, letting the door close and lock behind him as it normally would so as to remain unheard and unnoticed.

Jack's couldn't help but let his mouth gape a little. Zack's room was a mess. It was strange, because while the chao was clearly not the most mentally stable, he often tried to maintain a professional appearance. Jack guessed this is where Zack vented his rage and disorder. Shattered bones littered the place, and there were several holes in the wall, and even the floor. Cluttered books and paper were scattered all about the room. After initially stopping himself, the purple-tinged chao allowed himself to sigh.

"This is going to take a while." He muttered to himself, his disdain for Zack growing by the second.

--

This was only the third time Quartz had been in his ex's quaint little house, and by far the longest he had ever stayed. He had to admire the place, as she kept it tidy. The decorations, while not his type -- much too dainty -- were admittedly pleasant and suited her well. Quartz' pragmatic nature led him to be most impressed by her collection of herbs. While he was not well-versed in their different effects, the power chao knew Melody could use the incredible variety at her disposal to fix up most ailments right in the comfort of her very home.

He began his morning with a couple gulps of water and a short work out session.

Melody rose from sleep and began the day with her standard hygiene routine. Though admittedly, as she bathed herself she found it difficult to keep her mind off the danger threatening their island... almost a sense of guilt that she was attending to such basic things when someone out there could be being severely harmed or subjugated right now, unable to enjoy even the simplest comforts as she was now. Still she knew that even in such troubled times, it was important to take care of herself. Melody ran her soapy hands down each head spike in quiet contemplation.

Later she'd drained the tub and toweled her small body off, emerging from her washroom to step into the main area. She paused when she spotted Quartz, currently cranking out push-ups with remarkably little effort; it seemed like he could just keep going without ever having to stop. The hero fly didn't greet him immediately, hanging back a while just to watch him and the muscles flexing in his arms beneath the smooth white skin.

Eventually she found her voice. "Good morning, Quartz. Would you care for any breakfast?"

--

Cue's lips pulled back into a mighty grin as he nuzzled his nose roughly against that of the amethyst fly somewhat above him from her position in his lap. He looped his burly arms around her back and gripped her vibrant Phoenix wings, tugging gently... at least for him.

He could feel her excitement rise with his own as he did so. But there was another feeling as well... In his head. A throbbing. It grew in intensity even as he sought to ignore it for the pleasure currently occupying his lap, but finally he could no longer and the dream faded away altogether. Grumbling at the interruption, the shiny white chao moved to rise from his bed, only to encounter a chao-sized object in his path. His yellow eyes blinked open and he ended up rubbing them in startled disbelief. "K-Kaylessa??" he got out in a haggard voice, a direct result of the dehydration his body had suffered from over-inbibing.

--

It wasn’t the sun that awoke him, but rather the stiffness in his joints and the formation of eyecrust along his lids. Dash knuckled his eyes with his hands to urge them to produce some lubrication, simultaneously arching his back and pointing his toes outward. Even after a night’s sleep, yesterday’s frantic activities could still easily be felt throughout his body. But he wouldn’t let it stop him. He stood and quickly located a nearby coconut tree that was bearing ripe fruit, giving it a swift shake-down. The large fruit tumbled onto the grass and he picked it up, taking a large bite out of it as he started with a gentle jog toward the next village. Breakfast-to-go! As his joints began to warm up and the ache in his leg muscles began to subside, he felt a small smile of satisfaction creep across his face– it always felt good to run.

He arrived at the next garden just a few minutes later. It was partially built into a rock face, where chao could reside inside. The trunks of the trees here were thick and deeply rooted into the rock to give them stability. At present, a group of neutral power chao were harvesting them. Like the other places he’d been, the chao all seemed to be blissfully going about their business, unawares of what had occurred deeper into Shimmering Island. Dash cleared his throat, “Excuse me.”

A few of the chao turned to give him a look. “Who are you?” a normal power asked. He looked a bit older than the others from his coloration and the length of his head spikes.

“My name’s Dash,” the run chao answered, “But that’s not important. I’m delievering a message that Shimmering Island is under attack by an evil chao named Kinto Q.”

“Evil?” one of the younger, more orange-tinted normal strength chao queried; she sounded dubious.

He’d encountered resistance like this before. “I know it sounds unlikely,” Dash continued, “But he is fully capable of villianous acts. I watched him destroy the Normal Garden with my own eyes.”

“And you’re telling me you did NOTHING to stop him?” a confident voice chimed out from the boulders. A power chao emerged, shiny pink and absent feet. Her tail gave a swish as she folded her arms and leaned up against the rocks to regard him mockingly. “That sounds pretty cowardly. But then, you ARE a run chao.”

Quartz had not noticed Melody come in, and was startled when Melody spoke to him. He fell on his face mid pushup before quickly sitting up as if nothing had happened. "Yeah, that sounds great." He said quickly, sitting upright to give her his utmost attention.

--

Adrian awoke with a start, his heart pounding and head throbbing. He quickly recalled these symptoms, and his mind calmed despite his aches. It hurt terribly to change shape the way he did. The little grey chao felt the turmoil it put his body through. Allowing himself to continue lying on his back, he began observing his surroundings. Just a lot of foliage, like usual. He could see no apparent damage nearby, which soothed his conscience somewhat.

Slowly sitting himself upright, he groaned aloud at the pain but assumed a meditating position and allowed himself to calm down. Adrian began the process of sifting through what memories he still had of the previous night, trying to recall if anything important happened.

It took some time before he remembered the sight of a sinister-looking swim chao. He had done battle with this chao -- that much he knew. But why?

--

Kaylessa awoke with a snort, followed by a big stretch that met some resistance she had not anticipated. Her fist collided with Cue's face, and if she were a better person, she might have apologized following the twinge of remorse she felt.

Instead, she played it off as if she had fully intended for that to happen, as if she had remembered falling asleep in the shiny white chao's bed in the first place.

"Oh Cue, did that hurt?" The amethyst chao said, chuckling and promptly getting out of bed. Her head was throbbing softly, and memories of the night before began to enter her consciousness. I really need some water. She thought.

Melody felt a small giggle build in her chest, but she was unable to keep it from escaping her mouth at her ex’s small blunder. His nose remained a little red, if from impact or embarrassment, it wasn’t clear. “Okay, it’ll be ready in just a few minutes. I’m sure an omelette is alright?” she said, sweeping from the room to head for the kitchen.

Once there, she put a pan on the stove and opened the fridge to grab out some eggs and cheese. An exclamation point formed over her head and she leaned out to speak loud enough for Quartz to hear her, “Perhaps you could help me out and go grab some mushrooms, tomatoes, onion, and dill weed from the garden?”

--

The burly chao abruptly ceased rubbing the spot on his nose the moment Kaylessa made the inquiry. He gave a scoff. “You’re gonna hafta try harder than that, girl,” he chuckled confidently, but really he was avoiding the question on his mind… what had they done or not done last night?? He had no clue, but he was sure Kaylessa was well-aware. By her reactions, she didn’t seem upset– that was relieving to him, if nothing else. He let his chest swell and a lopsided grin to take over his features, “You enjoy last night?”

--

Dorian flipped the page of his novel and reached for his tea to lift it up. When he did so, its weight drew his attention away from the book. His teacup was, sadly, empty. Hm’ing, he slid the satin ribbon into the spine of the manual, folding it closed and standing to go acquire more of the spiced liquid.

--

A less humble chao would’ve taken personal offense to her words. Dash shook his head. “You don’t understand. This chao was very powerful. More powerful than any chao I’ve seen before.”

“Oh, and you’re one to judge power when you see it?” the girl chao continued to mock. “Maybe you don’t know who you’re talking to.” With those words, she leapt from her perch on the boulders. She glided, briefly, before transitioning into a double front-flip. Her body contorted towards the end, throwing her fist out to collide with a large rock jutting out of the ground as she landed. It calved clean down the middle, and she rose from her landing with a smirk. “We’ve got plenty of power here in Rock Village. We can take care of ourselves.” There were some murmurs ranging from mild agreement to eye-rolling at the shiny pink chao’s showboating.

Dash couldn’t lie he was pretty impressed by the manuever he’d just seen the other normal-aligned chao make, but he also knew what a mistake it was too be too cocky about their current situation. He tried to be diplomatic. “I can appreciate that you want to stand up for yourselves, but if you’d been there, you’d know it’s going to take more than sheer strength and determination to defeat Kinto Q.”

“Then I’m just the chao to take him on,” the obstinent girlchao said, thumbing towards herself.

“That’s… that’s really not a good idea…” Dash began, feeling a tad bewildered. Thus far he had not encountered this kind of reaction from any of the chao he’d told of Kinto Q’s attack.

--

Candice had awoken slightly before the time she knew the Master’s right hand, Zack, made his rounds. She’d overheard plenty of hub-bub the night before that new ‘slaves’ had been captured and taken into the fold. She wasn’t sure if she did this because she liked torturing herself or if she still somehow held some tiny glimmer of hope that one day, they’d all be free of Kinto Q’s clutches…

The hero swim chao tip-toed up to the corner, glancing around it at the cells. Inside were the three new chao, as rumors had promised-- a dark power, a neutral normal, and a sapphire normal swim. Candice’s mouth fell open when she realized what the last chao was cradling in her arms… it was a baby chao! It took everything she had to not draw in a gasp.

“Shh… shh…” the sapphire chao vocalized as she bounced the fussy youngster in her lap. “Oh… what are we going to do…?” she bemoaned to her cellmates.

“There’s nothing we CAN do, Rosetta,” the neutral normal said, glumly but matter-of-factly. “Except do whatever that Kinto Q wants us to.”

“We can make a plan to escape,” the dark power chao thudded his open palm with his other fist.

“Are you kidding??” the neutral normal gawked. “Did you SEE what Kinto Q did to our garden? He’ll kill us if we try to escape; he doesn’t need us. You saw all the slaves he had working in that-- that… huge room! You’ve got a death-wish, Shokolad!”

Candice felt herself frown. It wasn’t unlike a lot of chatter she’d overheard from recently-captured chao. Often it didn’t take them more than a couple of weeks to ‘accept their fate’.

“But we’re on the inside now, Hector. We just have to be patient and diligent and we’ll find a way out.”

Rosetta squeezed her eyes shut and held her baby closer, trying not to cry herself. Candice took this moment to make herself known, stepping from around the corner. “I wouldn’t recommend trying anything,” she said.

Rosetta gasped and drew away from the bars and deeper into the cell. “Wh-who are you??” She seemed skittish and untrusting, though who wouldn’t be in her situation.

“A friend,” Candice assured quietly. She glanced about to ensure the corridor was still clear. “You three… you were captured from the Normal Garden, is that right?”

Shokolad sucked a tooth, arms folded. “That’s right,” he made the admission.

Candice pressed for more details. “I also heard there was someone there… someone who stood up to Kinto Q… and managed to hurt him. Did… did you see who it was?” She held her breath as the three chao looked amongst one another, deciding who and how they would answer. The squeak of a door hinge made all of them jump.

"Yeah, that sounds ... excellent, actually." The power chao spoke awkwardly. Following her request, he immediately went to go get the ingredients she had requested. Just as he opened her door and stepped through the threshold, he paused, realizing he had no idea what dill weed actually looked like. Feeling embarrassment for the second time already that day, he crinkled his nose. "Umm." He vocalized. "Melody, what does dill weed look like?" He said, eyeing the garden from where he stood.

--

Kaylessa was taken aback at Cue's directness, but quickly regained herself. "Yeah, last night was great." She said, sounding smooth as silk. "I slept great! You have a good mattress." She enjoyed teasing Cue.

"With that out of the way, do you have any water?"

--

Spike and Peaches had risen early to recommence the spreading of news. During their "tour," Peaches had picked up Station Square's newspaper and noticed the destruction of the Normal Garden was, of course, on the front page. This meant that they only had to alert more isolated settlements. Of course, the two had little luck in doing this -- many of the outlying villages were inhabited primarily by those who had no interest in troubles that plagued "the city folk." Many insisted that Kinto Q's attacks did not at all concern them.

On their way out of yet another stubborn village, Peaches considered the next logical place to go. She groaned.

"What?" Spike inquired. He sounded impatient. The orange chao would've been annoyed with him, but truthfully, she couldn't blame him for feeling short with everyone at this point.

"Next stop is the Rock Village." She said. "If the places we've been to this morning tried your patience, wait until you see these guys."

The hero run said nothing, only raised a brow.

"Been there a couple of times for some climbing races." She explained. "It's home to some of the most proud chao I know."

"Awesome." Was all he replied before trudging on after her.

--

"Rise and shine." Zack spoke as he opened the door to the slaves' cells. Of course, no one much responded to that.

"RISE AND SHINE!" He shouted, finding his voice. Many of the slaves groaned awake at that. None of them were particularly allegiant, but that was of little consequence.

"We have a lot of cleaning to do." He began, walking slowly down the cell hall. "After last night's festivities, there is much cleaning to be done."

"By 'we,' you mean 'you slaves,' right?" A dark run yelled. "God forbid you do an honest day's work, Zack." There was a moment's silence, and then some murmurs.

Zack walked briskly over to the source of the outburst. He briefly eyed the chao -- he was looking quite skinny, even for a run chao, but his eyes were strong nonetheless. 'Chakky' was notoriously one of the few slaves who had maintained some sense of defiance, and unluckily for him, Zack was in a particularly sour mood. Facing off with the fool, he reached for his keys.

"Wh -- what are you doing?" He said, a quiver in his voice.

"Disciplining." The black and blue chao said shortly, turning the key and opening the door.

Chakky was defenseless and caught by surprise. Zack beat him to the ground with his fists, and kicked him on the ground. He was beaten savagely for half a minute. The sounds of the impacts and Chakky's wailing, at first loud but gradually more quiet, filled the chamber. Zack was disturbingly silent throughout. When he left the cell, he didn't bother locking or even fully closing the door. The neutral run made a beeline for Candice, whom he had just noticed was already here.

"Candi," Zack began, not questioning her unexpected presence but staring very intentionally into her eyes. "You know what to do." He said, gesturing roughly towards the brutalized and now-unconscious chao.

"THE REST OF YOU! Cleaning duty beckons." He began opening the cells, leaving the cell of the new arrivals for last, as he had to instruct them.

“It’s… oh…” Melody blinked, pausing in cracking eggs into a bowl; it obviously hadn’t occurred to her that her ex wouldn’t be able to easily differentiate between all the different herbs in her garden the way she was. “Well it’s a vibrant green, small but almost fern-like,” she tried to describe it in a way he could follow, but there were several plants out there that matched that description. “It has little yellow flowers in umbel formation.” Oh… perhaps she wasn’t doing a very good job; she should probably fetch it herself.

--

“Huh?” A question mark formed over the large chao’s head. He momentarily pressed his hand down on his mattress as if to test what she’d just said. “Oh,” he stood suddenly then in reaction to her request. “Well, there’s the tap…” he plodded towards his bathroom sink, though it didn’t seem he’d thought too deeply about why she wanted the water or for what purpose.

--

“Want me to prove it to you, Speedy?” the shiny pink chao put her hands on her hips. Dash opened his mouth to form a reply when all of a sudden, she thrust forward at him. He let out a “Whoa!”, side-stepping just in time to narrowly avoid a fist aimed for his face. Her left hand came around in a hook punch; he got up his arm in time to block it, but it almost wasn’t enough to stop the sheer force behind it. He saw her face light up with a smirk, right before she head-butted him and sent him toppling backward with a swirly emotiball. He shook his head, regaining himself rapidly. Seeing him back on his feet, the girlchao came at him again with a flurry of attacks.

“I’m not asking you to prove anything!” he yelped as he leapt back to attempt to disengage her. He zipped up the out-cropping of rocks to his left; she climbed after him with absolute ease. It was quickly becoming obvious that the only thing he had her outmatched in was his speed, and he continued to duck, dodge, and avoid her blows. It had drawn quite a crowd; everyone who’d formerly been toiling away in Rock Village had stopped to spectate the impromptu sparring match.

“Whoever this Kinto Q is, he’s got another thing coming. And that’s me-- Ammy!” She managed to snag ahold of his foot and tossed him from the rock face. Dash tumbled downward before catching the air in his bat-like wings in flight, but it wasn’t long after that that he felt her pounce onto his back and secure a choke-hold around his neck. His eyes bugged out and his hands leapt to her arm, trying to get a breath in around the firm grip, while simultaneously attempting to control his trajectory.

--

Candice winced at the sound of every strike Zack made, grooves forming in her forehead. At the sound of Chakky’s wails, Rosetta’s baby began to bawl too, thick droplets pouring down its small cheeks.

At his command, Candice nodded, inwardly thankful he had not questioned her presence here. Zack had monitored her very closely her the first couple weeks after Kinto Q had granted her ‘free roam’ of his complex. "For her unwavering allegiance…” she could recall his words now, spoken softly as one of his claws drug gingerly beneath her chin. She shuddered a bit at the memory, but hurried grab a pail of water and her supply box to attend to poor Chakky.

Her ministrations gradually brought the injured chao back to consciousness. “You know you musn’t struggle so hard…” she whispered to the emaciated dark run. Every time he had, his rations had subsequently been cut… she hated to see him growing so gaunt and fragile. Out of the corner of her eye, she paid attention to Zack and the newcomers.

--

When he awoke, Kinto Q found his sour, brooding mood to be unchanged. Indeed, most of his night had been spent tossing and turning and twisting the bedsheets in his fists, furious that any creature DARE to possess a power perhaps rivaling his. There was truly only one solution-- he had to find the beast again, either to annihilate it, domineer it, or take its power for his own.

In his mind, he favored the third option most.

But he knew it to be a task that would take preseverence and require considerable knowledge. The swim chao saw to a spritely breakfast and donned his cloak. "I shall not be returning to the compound until evening," he told the slave currently gathering his dirty dishes on a tray to take back to the kitchen. "Inform Zack so he can attend to things in my absence." The chao nodded his understanding. "Oh, and send someone to fix that," Kinto Q motioned at the broken vanity before stalking from his chamber.

He turned down the hall in the direction of the rear exit to slip out without the burden of addressing his subjects. He had too much on his mind for any grandiose speeches today. When he surfaced, he made his heading-- the Great Library, a place where records and books had been kept for many ages, over dozens of generations of chao. If he was going to learn anything about the beast he had seen, he was sure it would be there somewhere in the lore. He just needed to dig for it.

Trying to formulate her description in his head, Quartz blinked confusedly. She surely noticed, too, as she briskly began to walk towards the door with him. "Uhh, I'll get the mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions." He said, eyeing her little garden and attempting to look more confident than he felt.

--

Without delay, Kaylessa went to his tap and splashed water on her face. Pausing a moment to consider her options, she then proceeded to maneuver herself such that she could drink straight from the tap, which involved lying atop the bathroom sink.

--

Zack walked briskly to the newly slaves. He was in the element now -- he was commanding, powerful, and -- something stopped him.

He paused, eyeing the baby chao that Rosetta held tightly in her arms. He did not notice the look of fear in Rosetta's face, nor Hector's, nor the look of defiance in Shokolad's. All he saw was the face of this newborn chao. This was the first time they had abducted a newborn. The black and blue chao wondered why it bothered him to see the child there -- after all, he had been the one leading this group of slaves to the base in the first place. But something was different about seeing the newborn encaged, helpless and inactive. For the first time in a long time, something felt genuinely wrong to him.

Zack decided to compromise. He would not put the infant to work, however, he would still use the child's mother.

"CANDICE!" He bellowed across the hall. "You're not usually up to much, so why don't you babysit today."

He opened the cell to lead and instruct the rest on their duties for the day.

Together, the two of them gathered the ingredients and found their way back to the kitchen. Soon the delicious smell was wafting from the frying pan as Melody made the final necessary flip to finish the omelette. She hummed as she cooked, not even consciously aware of the tune that caressed her vocal chords.

--

Cue’s lips deformed into a lopsided grin at the sight of Kaylessa’s awkward posturing; that grin quickly became a snicker, which soon became a full belly-laugh. He tilted backward on his bed laughing, kicking his feet in the air. The girl chao must not quite be at 100% of her mental capacities to attempt such a comical maneuver.

--

“Ohhh TATER TOTS!” Dash yelped out as he plummeted out of the sky down to the hard ground below. At the last second he tucked his head to roll out of it to try and lessen the impact; Ammy sprung from his back and did a three-point landing several paces behind him as he tumbled through the dirt and rocks.

Dash winced and lifted his head up, vision slightly blurry. But he could distinguish two pairs of very vibrant colored feet standing not two feet from where he’d come to a stop-- orange and lime green.

--

A question-mark emotiball appeared over Candice’s head and shortly thereafter, the small wailing child chao was thrust into her arms by Zack. She stood there holding the youngster at arm’s length, not sure what to do. She was a masseuse, not a wet nurse.

Zack urged the three new captives from their cell. Rosetta tarried only a moment to urgently convey, “Please, take good care of little Demogorgon...” There was a desperation in her features-- that of a loving mother forced to trust the goodwill of complete stranger with her child. Candice swallowed. “He quiets down if you blow on his face. Like this,” the sapphire chao pursed her lips and blew, and little Demogorgon stopped fussing to blink, almost as if in confusion where the sudden breeze had come from. “He likes to eat at nine and noon and three and six, and he takes his naps and eleven and two...” Candice lifted an eyebrow at the hurried instructions, almost wishing she had a pad of paper and a pen to take notes.

“Hurry up!” Zack snorted in their direction, seeming more agitated than usual. Which was saying something.

Rosetta planted a quick kiss on her infant’s forehead; he gurgled and drooled. It fell on Candice’s arm and her non-existent nose screwed up in slight disgust. “Thank you; I hope one day I can make it up to you!” Rosetta said as she hurried to join the pack of slaves.

Candice frowned. This was not a wrinkle she’d been anticipating to her coming days. She stared down at the infant. “Demogorgon, huh? I think I’m just gonna call you something shorter. Is ‘Mogo okay with you?”

The child wiggled his feet, happy in her arms. It seemed answer enough.

Standing just outside her kitchen, unaware of himself, Quartz stared absent-mindedly at Melody as she cooked and crooned. For the first time in a long time, he didn't feel stressed in the slightest; his worries seemed less important, somehow.

He allowed himself to smile in Melody's direction, though she wasn't looking his way.

--

"Right." Kaylessa said, making herself upright and brushing off her wet lips with her forearm. "What time is it?" She asked Cue. Eyeing the room, she saw no timepiece at first glance. "Don't you have a bloody clock?"

--

"Oh, jeez." Peaches muttered, eyeing the battered red chao that lay before them. Spike promptly brought Dash to his feet before eyeing the neutral chao's "opponent."

"Is there any point to this?" The green chao wondered louder than entirely necessary; no doubt Ammy could hear. Peaches winced. "Let's not make this any worse..."

--

Over the course of an hour, Jack engaged himself in what he thought a contract killer would never have to do: Sorting through paperwork. He was impatient; the idleness did not suit him, and the purplish chao found himself quite frustrated throughout the whole process. After having no luck with the papers littered amongst the floor, he thought to investigate Zack's bookshelf instead. There, between two of his spell books, he found the fabled list. He eyed it quickly, noting names such as "Diamond," "Aizaak," and "Melody." He had a passing knowledge of them; all stuck-up do-gooders.

He hid the list quickly as he could between his pudding-like skin and his cloak. Jack made sure the clutter looked close to what it had before listening at the door for footsteps. Hearing nothing, he promptly opened the door and left, seeking out Dorian as quickly as he could.

“All done!” Melody proclaimed with a serene smile. She slid the steaming omelette out of the pan and onto a plate with absolute grace– the delicassy held together perfectly thanks to her use of just a small amount of wheat flour in the mix and her own care in preparing it. She turned then and noticed how Quartz was looking at her, the way his eyes were somewhat defocused yet fixed on her. The girl chao felt the heat of blood blooming to her cheeks and she cocked her head somewhat. “Quartz?”

“I have no need of a clock, I rise when the sun rises!” Cue thumped his chest, but then he realized he had no gauge of what time it was either because his room in the underground lair had no windows or openings to the outside. He stood there looking rather oafish.

A hiss escaped Dash’s teeth as Spike helped him to his feet; the now-scuffed parts of his body were painful to say the least. “I just came to warn the village…” he said to Spike, under his breath.

“Oh I see,” an impatient Ammy folded her arms. “You brought friends to give you assistance? Well I hate to break it to you, but three-on-one and your odds still aren’t good.” She cracked her knuckles to signal to the new-comers that she was more than ready for whatever challenge they brought to the table.

“Alright then, ‘Mogo… I guess your mom said you like to eat, so… since it’s morning, I guess we should go find you some breakfast?” Candice spoke to the child though she was not absolutely certain why when she knew the infant could not form the words to answer back. Instead he drooled happily and stretched out his arms to try and grab at her face. It was pretty obnoxious. But also illogically cute. Candice turned the baby around to settle him on her hip as she’d seen other chao mothers do and headed off for the great dining room.

When she entered, an altogether nother problem occurred to her. Kinto Q’s lair was severely lacking in booster seats. She glanced about and eventually settled on snagging a few thick manuals off a nearby shelf and stacked them up to form a backrest and arms so Demogorgon wouldn’t topple off his mount. She could see it now, her first day babysitting and the baby in question suffers a massive concussion. “I guess there’s no point in asking what you’d like to eat, is there?” she posited to the child, who only sucked his fist and crooned. “…I’ll just get a variety. You’re bound to like something.” The hero swim wandered off to the kitchen.

Dorian’s fixation on his poetry lifted only when a series of loud thumps started up nearby. Brow furrowing, he glanced away from his reading and over to the noise-maker in question. He’d expected to see one of Kinto Q’s less-than-intellectual cronies trying to get a slave’s attention to get an early start on their alcohol consumption for the day, but what he saw was a barely toddler hitting the table in amusement. A question mark formed readily over his head, very puzzled by the child’s presence and where it had come from.

His bafflement was interrupted by a hand on his shoulder. He jumped a bit, not having expected it. “Jack,” he half-muttered, annoyed his own preoccupation had kept him from hearing his stealthy companion’s arrival, but he hurried to cover it up and direct the conversation. “Did you acquire what we sought?”

Quartz blinked once, hard, before apparently snapping back to reality and focusing his eyes on her.

"Sorry. I mean, thanks." He said, preoccupying himself with the omelette as quickly as he could.

As the hero power chewed, the extent of his feelings became rapidly apparently. Why do I still have such feelings for her? He thought. She's beautiful, she's excellent in everything she puts her mind to... I have plenty of reason to admire her, but she's about as off-limits as they get.

Besides, he thought, I don't do well with girlchao. I just don't.

"Damn good omelette," he said suddenly, daring to meet Melody's eyes again for the first time in what seemed like minutes to him.

--

"Umm, right." Kaylessa said. She couldn't suppress a grin; Cue's stupidity was amusing at times. "I'm going to go get breakfast."

The amethyst chao paused at the door, realizing she might have to instruct this idiot on what seemed obvious to her.

"I imagine you're hungry so take a moment to follow, I don't want anyone thinking we got up to anything we didn't last night."

Without even pausing to hear his response, she briskly exited the shut the door perhaps more forcibly than entirely necessary.

--

"Oh for crying out loud. OK." Peaches muttered. Spike eyed her. "Don't --"

"Look, no one here is even looking for a fight!" The orange chao shouted, briefly looking toward Dash to make sure -- and she highly doubted otherwise -- that the red chao hadn't initiated such idiocy. There was no doubt in Peaches' mind his foot-in-mouth syndrome had caused this debacle. "We're tired of fighting. All we're doing is telling everyone to be aware of a particularly violent and powerful chao named Kinto Q."

"If anyone in this backwards village ever read a newspaper they might already know that..." Spike said quietly.

"Shush." Peaches replied, her arms now out in front of her as if to signal Ammy she came with no harmful intent.

--

A brief grin passed Jack's lips; he enjoyed startling people.

"I have indeed." He sat down next to Dorian. "Some names you might know more about than I?" He said, slipping the list in Dorian's direction as covertly as he could.

She’d almost expected Quartz to say something else entirely, but at the commendation of her omelette, a giggle unwittingly escaped her mouth, which she only partially-successfully stifled with a hand. “I’m glad you’re enjoying it,” she pat him on the arm, the touch conveying her affection for the other chao.

But quickly she found her thoughts clouding over once more. As nice as it was to enjoy the early morning having Quartz as her guest, they had pressing and indeed ominous matters at hand to take care of. She turned to go gather a few important items for their trip into the city, including the metallic half-sphere they’d found among the rubble of the Neutral Garden. She let her non-existant fingers trail over the etching, sensing in her heart it would lead them to answers, and that those answers would lead them to whomever had caused the destruction, and that hopefully, she and Quartz could bring them to justice and stop the pain and bloodshed.

Melody shoved the item deep into her basket. “I’m almost ready to go,” she informed Quartz. “You?”

“What didn’t we do?” the shiny white chao asked with complete and total seriousness, but Kaylessa had already exited with a slam! Cue found himself sitting to ponder her words slowly and carefully to attempt to come to the answer himself. They’d gotten drunk… had an arm wrestle that he’d won— a grin temporarily spread over his face, then he went back to thinking hard— he’d passed out… she’d carried him back to his room… and then… well, then they’d nuzzled and slept together. About five seconds later, his eyes widened in realization as to what Kaylessa had meant.

Then he spent a long time wondering if because of saying that, it meant Kaylessa didn’t want to do… that… with him.

It was about twenty minutes of hard thinking Cue spent from start to finish, before he changed his gear from the night’s previous and lumbered from his chamber out to the dining hall.

“Oh, Red-Streak here already told us that,” Ammy rebutted with an almost palpable roll of her eyes imbedded into the tone of her voice. Dash merely frowned. “And I was letting him know firsthand— or should I say, firstfist—” she punched her other hand again, “that those of us here at Rock Village aren’t afraid of this ‘powerful’ chao.” Several of the onlookers of the village gave a shout of agreement; it only bolstered the shiny pink chao’s ego. She thumped her chest, “We define the word ‘powerful’. If he comes here, we’re gonna whoop his ass.” More cheers rose up behind her, a few flexed their large arms, others hefting up rocks and shot-putting them in show of how far and fast they could throw them.

They were certainly a militant bunch, all apparently eager for a fight; Dash didn’t know how to solve this. He wished Melody were here. She’d know just what to say to get these chao to calm down and listen to reason. She was like that. Serene and peaceful. It radiated from her like warmth did off a candle. Melody had entrusted him to this task. To warn every inhabitant, to promote safety across Shimmering Island. And then it hit him. Maybe Rock Village had a different role to play in this situation. He stepped forward to address Ammy once more.

“You’re definitely strong,” he began— the bruises and knicks on his pudding-like flesh were a testament to that— “And I can tell every one of you is strong of heart as well. Kinto Q may not pose a threat to Rock Village—” That was kind of a lie, he knew from how quickly he’d seen the Neutral Garden fall that this village was at risk as well, but he told it anyhow, knowing stroking their ego would keep them listening; indeed, many of the powerchao were nodding along to his words. “—but he does pose a great threat to other gardens and villages here on Shimmering Island. I’d ask you to assemble into groups and each take one of the other villages to add to its protection.” There were immediately murmurs of interest and enthusiasm and pride springing up amongst the chao. Dash felt his own confidence swell.

Dorian’s eyes flitted down to the page; discreetly, he picked it up and slid it neatly in the spine of his book so that he could study it all the while looking as though he was still immersed in his literature. Though he was not typically an expressive chao, his eyebrow drew up and the corner of his mouth twitched in interest. Zack had certainly not been idle in assembling a list of their master’s potential adversaries. Some of these individuals, he’d dare wager, did pose quite a threat to the rebellion mounting on Shimmering Island. Best, however, that the four of them should tackle a few of the smaller fry before attempting to net the bigger fish on the list, at least initially, until his three companions had gained some additional experience– at the moment Jack, Kaylessa and especially Cue were not much more than common ruffians.

He allowed his eyes to lid halfway as if growing bored, shutting the list within his book and setting it down on the table to address Jack beside him. “I believe this shall give us the means to curry favor with the master,” he prefaced (as he so often did). “The name second down from the top… Aizaak. I know of his synagogue; it lies near the eastern forest. No doubt with all the recent troubling goings-on, many will be attending his service. It would allow us to eliminate Aizaak and have the added benefit of a little chaos. What do you think?” Even he could feel the stirrings of excitement in his belly at the proposition.

The hero swim returned with a couple of plates– one for herself, a nice eggs benedict (there were some benefits of being Kinto Q’s personal masseuse), and the other for Demogorgon, which was piled with all manner of fruit slices, berries, crackers and cheeses. The infant crooned happily at her return, reaching out for the plate that was nowhere near his grasp. Candice smiled as she sat down, feeling joy in a joyless place. “Oh, you are a hungry one, aren’t you?” She picked up one of the grapes and held it up and Mogo opened his mouth for her to stick it in. He chewed and giggled simultaneously, then opened his mouth eagerly for another.

Candice continued feeding the baby, taking bites of her own food between servings. Her focus wasn’t completely on her food, however. Two chao at the table next to her… what were their names? Dorian, she was fairly certain, and… Mack? It was something that rhymed with Zack, that much she knew. The two of them were conversing in hushed tones that most of Kinto Q’s cronies lacked and they were undoubtedly up to no good. She watched out of the corner of her eye as Mack entrusted some document to Dorian, who placed it in his book and began to speak. She listened hard. Mogo whined for another kiwi slice at an inopportune moment; she hushed him frustratedly and handed him the plate to placate him. However, two pieces of his commentary made it to her ears… ‘Eliminate’ and ‘Chaos’.
