SA1 VS SA2

Which one is better?

For me, it's SA2: Better story, better levels, better Chao System, better characters, better everything. Especially the camera and Chao.

I played the GameCube versions of both games. So my experiences come from that.

Sonic Adventure DX:
-Had an over wold which makes replaying the game more interesting to me.
-Tails can fly
-All of the characters have a unique thing to their stages, which is nicer.
-The Chao gardens are nicer and more interesting.
-I liked playing as Amy.
-I like the stage designs better.
-I preferred the the involvement the chaos emeralds had in this game.
-Chaos is a better final boss.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle:
-I GET TO PLAY AS EGGMAN AHH YES.
-Chao Karate is fun.
-I like the 2 Player mode.
-Rouge is cool.
-I like the chaos drives.
-Legendary animals are neat.
-Ark's a pretty cool place.
-FLYING DOG. I sort of prefer the boss battles in this game.
-I get. To play. As Eggman. WHEN DO I GET TO DO THIS AGAIN.

They both have good high points and low points. I like them equally. Though I prefer Amy's characterization and importance to the plot in the first game. In the second game she really has no point except to be the damsel in distress, hit on Sonic (dear Sega, please stop), and then give a pep-talk that could probably have just as easily been fulfilled by another Maria flashback or even Rouge. Plus at least Chaos was an actual character in the plot. the Bio-Lizard barely counts because he was an out of nowhere monster with absolutely no characterization. I HATE final bosses that had no real part in the plot until they appeared to be killed. Yes, yes. I know Rouge found that data on him and tried to confront Shadow with it. But it was practically a big lipped alligator moment until a GIANT FREAKING MUTANT SALAMANDER appeared out of thin air! "Oh hey guys, remember this? No? Well kill it and we'll never talk about it again. And we wont explain it in this game either."
Darn kids and their boost mode. In my day we had Spin Dash for speed AND WE LIKED IT.
100% Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, YEEHAW. Also ow, my sanity. But also yeehaw.
I need a new chao game like I need oxygen. Sega bby plz

Speaking strictly in terms of game-play, SA2 had a more polished level design, more seamless movement mechanics, and was devoid of much of the poor programming that littered SA1: graphical glitches, bugs, and clunky movements, which would be acceptable if that was the standard for major console games in 1999, but it wasn't. SM64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Crash Bandicoot, all games that proceed SA1's release, had more polish both graphically and in terms of control. That said, SA1 with its somewhat sloppy finish, poor voice acting and abysmal writing, (there is a difference between a game with a simple plot and a game with a bad simple plot, something Sonic Team suffers from) combined with just okay mechanics does not make the game a joy for me to replay. And while neither of the games have aged well, in my opinion, SA2's replay value (missions and their ranks, the refined chao system, and light multiplayer) allows me to come back for nostalgia every few years.

SA1 Was the original. I liked how it wasn't an "all go forward" game and just beat the stages. You would explore the City, Ancient Ruins, and the Egg Carrier. The Casino was amazing too, considering they added so much detail. It was a 1999 Dreamcast game, one of the earlier ones. Back then the graphics for SA1 were a masterpiece. Sure, the voices may be a tad off when the characters move their mouths, but that's just a thread they missed. I liked how you could play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big the Cat, and E102 Gamma. Each character had their own stages, their own story, and their very own unique abilities. In SA2 they took away Tails' ability to fly freely, Big the Cat, E102, and Amy. Sure, running away from the robot seemed to be a bit embarrassing around a large crowd, but that's what made Amy unique. Sonic just simply had to try to stop Eggman and Chaos, Tails accompanied him and instead ended up saving Station Square. Knuckles yet again searched for the shards of the Master Emerald, Amy had her own plot and had to escape a robot and protect a bird. Big had to find Froggy, and E102 Gamma had to struggle with the fact that he was created by the enemy and made his own quest to free his friends from misery. And there were Gold, Silver and Black Chao you could find in the Adventure fields, and you by hand had to deliver them to the Chao Gardens.

SAXD turned all that around into more thought-out graphics, but yet it was tweaked to where Perfect Chaos wasn't intimidating and a more glitchy control.

SA2 Was the worst of it all. SA2 removed Amy, E102 and Big to replace them with Rouge, Shadow and Eggman to play as. Sure the music and stages were better designed, but nonetheless it was a horrible game. All you had to do was run through the stages without a second thought and get to the goal. SA1 was the same, but SA2 removed the ability to explore the areas. The Chao Gardens were neater, that's true, but the Gardens were lower-leveled and less creative, like Atomic listed. Sure the Chao Races and Karate were more thought out, but to teach your Chao how to swim you had to give it animals with the Swimming abillity. In SA1 you had to leave your Chao in the water for about 3 minutes before it learned. Thus the stages were a hell lot easier.

I'm putting my vote on SA1.

I direct you to Rareware's work with Banjo-Kazooie that came out several months before Sonic Adventure. While the textures of SA1 are eye-popping for their time, the graphical presentation is okay at best. Other companies were already moving in the direction of a more refined appearance; this was Sega catching up, bugs included.

The voices do not have a modicum of inflection. However voice acting was commonly poor back then--Resident Evil comes to mind--and this is also a problem with both Adventure games, so I'll agree with you there.
Yukki wrote:Each character had their own stages
True, but a large majority of these stages were nerfed versions of Sonic's stages to suit the character, although Amy's stages took the biggest departure from the other characters in terms of being different. With the exception of the driving levels in SA2, levels were generally drastically different from each other.

I am fond of SA1's different play styles, but they leave much to be desired. With the exception of Amy's puzzle solving, the stages of other characters played like mini-games in terms of length.

But you do have your opinions, so I won't be offended if you disagree with me.

SA: gotta love that lip-sync, some broken cameras, boring exploration of the hub worlds to find the next levels, clunky controls, and most of the graphics, like atomic said, were pretty average for the time.
SA2: gotta love that rather improved lip-sync, mostly good camera, no boring hub world, interesting story, quick cutscenes, much better Chao system, the game looks overall better, and the controls are way better.

I do like SA, but I would much rather play SA2.
