I'm starting to believe that Majora's mask is becoming more overrated and Ocarina of time is becoming more underrated.

Re: Is Majora's Mask underrated?
Oh yeah, MM is becoming more overrated because of hipsters, the ones who don't want to be in with the OOT crowd, but want to be in with the Zelda crowd, since most of them never played anything before OOT, and everything after MM is considered modern. They say MM is the best.
Then they make up all this 2deep4u dark bull**** to make it seem like Nintendo did the Holocaust to a video game, so everyone will be scared of all things in there and make up creepypastas and lie about how brilliant the game is, when in reality OOT is the superior game.
More dungeons, more items, more everything really. I believe it to be better anyway.
Of course, I'm biased, I've never played MM.

Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
I wouldn't say it's overrated, but there are those dirty hipsters that retro mentioned. It is still an incredibly good game, although I've not played it, and it sounds about equal to Ocarina of Time.
Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
I personally find Majora's Mask to be infinitely better than Ocarina of Time but I will say that by virtue of being underrated it's become slightly overrated.

Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
I haven't played Majora's Mask, but honestly, I would say the Legend of Zelda series as a whole is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I have thoroughly enjoyed every Zelda game that I have played to the final boss, but its is hardly the "Greatest of All Time" that many gamers make it out to be.
That said, MM is among the Zeldas that are overdue for a face lift.(Along with the NES and Gameboy Color games).

Ivo, Listen. Links awakening was a very important game for me and I think it should get a remake in a style similar to a link between worlds.

This so much, but I do agree that it is getting a lot more attention lately then it used too. HmSkyralie wrote:I personally find Majora's Mask to be infinitely better than Ocarina of Time but I will say that by virtue of being underrated it's become slightly overrated.

Ocarina of Time will never be underrated.
Ever.
Regardless of what you might see, OOT is far more integrated into pop culture than Majora's Mask will ever be. In fact, Majora's Mask met only decent to poor reception from fans when it first came out. Still, that doesn't necessarily mean that people don't put MM on a altar higher than it should be. By all means, it has, plenty of times. Still, I personally prefer MM over OOT any day, though maybe I'm biased because I'm one of the rare few who had MM as their first Zelda game.

Re: Is Majora's Mask underrated?
In the literature world, we call this subtext. MM is constantly throwing out reoccurring themes of loss, hopelessness, and acceptance, not to mention that the enemy is a constant presence that effects the gameplay itself. It isn't made up. Where there are themes, there is subtext. Per the writing field, some things are universally accepted as dark subtext. The fans did not conspire together in some scheme to invent subtext and pump up the game; that is laughable at best. Reviews have been lauding the game for its more focused subtext since the game released. Zelda games have certainly surpassed MM by now, but it was the first sign of Nintendo taking the writing seriously. However, Zelda on the whole has been vastly surpassed in the subtext and innovation department by games like Okami, Darksiders, and a slew of western RPGs, so keep in mind that the dark subtext is relatively tame. Gamers may not understand subtext or embellish it, but it doesn't make it any less apparent.retrolinkx wrote:Then they make up all this 2deep4u dark
That said, this does not make the game infinitely better, nor am I endorsing MM. Both games are on even ground because the formula is largely unchanged. Give or take a few gimmicks the mechanics are nearly identical.

Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
Hold the **** up, how is OOT underrated while fans are being so butthurt over people preferring TP over OOT? The majority chooses OOT as their favorite, while imo, OOT was great, but not the best. OOT is overrated, MM is... I wouldn't say under or overrated actually, I think MM gets the attention it deserves. But it certainly is a great game, it's not overrated at all.

Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
I don't understand why one needs to label a game overrated if it's popular. It's someone's opinion. If you don't agree with it, why even bother with them? Just go like the games you like. Personally I love Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword more than any other game in the series but I don't get upset when people say how much better every other game in the series is compared to them. I don't look at games in comparison to others in the series (unless we're going by game mechanics, which has nothing to do with the game itself since the 'game' to me is the game's story, characters, and the items themselves. Not how they're programmed or anything like that). I look at the games for what's in them on their own.
Majora's Mask is a great Zelda Game because of all that subtext and emotion you find all over the place. In other Zelda Games you see people being worried about their fate against the big bad at times (though I can't think of any examples that jump out at me. I don't talk to NPCs that often because 'If you leave the lost woods you'll die!' pretty much. Just generic NPC fair), but in Majora's Mask you see people facing their inevitable doom in different ways.
Two examples: The swordsman acts smug and fearless about the moon looming overhead. That is until when it's begun it's fall on the night of the third day. That is when you find him cowering in the back of his facility saying he doesn't want to die. Pretty much trembling, if I remember right. This is one of the most human reactions I'd ever seen in a video game as a child.
With the sisters Romani and Cremia. Cremia does not understand what's happening with the Moon. On the night of the final day you'll find them together. Romani has told Cremia she's allowing her to finally have some Chateau Romani, a [probably alcoholic] milk beverage. Cremia is confused because her sister told her she could only drink it once she's grown up. Romani just tells her sister that she's finally become an adult. Romani knows that she and Cremia are going to die, and she's letting Cremia experience something she's wanted to do but will never get the chance because they will not live to see another day.
In Majora's Mask all the characters had a voice to be heard. The focus was more on them. Sure you had a few temples to go through and badguys to kill, but the entire point of it was to save these people. I wish more Zelda games had this sort of character focus. A large cast of characters that actually have lives they want to keep living, and emotions that go beyond "[insert random line about town/Hyrule/nearby dungeon/oddly placed lore here]".

Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
I would say Wind Waker comes in second place in terms of character development. But those are just plenty of side quests on Windfall Island, nowhere near the focus Majora's Mask has. Link's Awakening, however, would be great to have redone with Majora's Mask style characterization, since, even though the people of the Wind Fish's dreams do not know of their doom, they are doomed, and it would almost make the Nightmares seem justified. But that is a topic for another time.
Anyway, most of what I would feel the need to say has been said. The push of hipster-esque liking things that are unliked and disliking what is liked is the main source of your feelings, I would think, and those people should not be listened to anyway.
Ocarina is so liked (and then marginalized) because it has very good reason to. It has game play and the first move to 3D Zelda title, more dungeons, more greater Zelda-plot relevance, and much more going for it.
Majora's Mask does not have the game play card, and that one is a big deal, seeing as how it was just OoT in that regard. It has characterization and more thematic content going for it; that is all. It is easily the better piece to analyze for, say, a joke AP Literature piece to turn in.
All in all, I would say Ocarina deserves greater respect (as a game) for what it did, and will leave a greater legacy. Majora's Mask is a very good story, and has aspects that Ocarina could have better incorporated, but hey, it came later.

I thought Ocarina of Time was almost the most overrated game of all time, always topping best video game ever lists. Funny thing is I've only played about 12 seconds of it, and that was the intro cutscenes in brawl which I just couldn't be bothered watching when I was younger...

It's a really good game in the eyes of many, many people. Of course it's going to top lists like that. You don't like OoT, and that's fine. However, you're the minority in that respect so your opinion will not hold as strong as others'.
Maybe I'm just incapable of seeing popular things as overrated. Do I hate seeing certain games on lists? Yeah, sure. But I'm not going to call them overrated for it. It's just a game I don't like while the majority does like it, that's all.

I don't call it overrated because I don't like it (I sometimes do, ssshhh), but because people blow it up WAY too big, and make a big deal out of it when people don't like it as much as they do, and that bothers me.PinkIceFox wrote:It's a really good game in the eyes of many, many people. Re: Is Majora's Mask Overrated?
I've made this "rant" many times before, but I really do hate that buzzword. What isn't overrated? Everything popular is called overrated, regardless of quality. It's a word that's used way too often to begrudgingly discredit pretty much anything. Is Shawshank Redemption overrated? Is 1984 overrated? I've seen them being called that before. Even cult classics get called overrated. I just want to get a full grasp of what that word means and why it should ever be used as a valid critique.
As for Majora's Mask, well yes, it has risen in popularity over the years. It's one of those games that gets massively overshadowed by its predecessor to the point where people are even blind to its existence. Then once the fog clears, people start to realize that it deserves more credit than was given at the time it was created. I personally don't rank it as the best Zelda game, not even top 3, but I did enjoy my time with it. The atmosphere is one of the best I've seen that's for sure. But I do agree that people oversell the dark mature themes. Not saying that they aren't there, of course, that would be incredibly silly, but people tend to over-analyze it to inane levels all the time.
I mean, look at this: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/articles/t ... oras-mask/
Is Final Fantasy VII? Super Mario 64? Suikoden II? Deus Ex? Greatest of all time. I think we all know that doesn't exist.

OOT: One of my favorites
MM: Never played it, but I liked BEN so whatever I guess
Link to the past: One of my favorites
Minish cap: It's a good game, I liked it
Twilight Princess: I got stuck once and quit
Wind Waker: Overrated
Zelda 1: It was cryptic, that's why you needed the power; Nintendo Power. Personally found it a little stupid though.
Zelda 2: More straight forward and easier to play, a good game
Skyward Sword: Meh
All the other LOZ games: they sure were games
I've been told by people that I told them I don't like Zelda games.
That's only half true.
I adore some games and hate others.
