Underrated Sonic Games you like?

Post by ChillyChao »

I'm curious, what underrated Sonic games do you like?
My faves are personally Sonic 06, the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series, Sonic Forces, Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric, and Sonic and the Black Knight.
What about you guys? :chaohappy:

For a certain value of underrated, Sonic Battle and Sonic Advance 3. Or any handheld Sonic games.

I wouldn't say 06 and Forces are underrated, but I do have the 2008 Olympic Games for the DS and it was pretty fun now that I think about it.

Chronicals, the Advance games (namely 3, that was my first Sonic game :herosway: ), and Sonic Unleashed (I LOVED the Werehog segments)

The Fighters is definitely underrated. Though I suck at it and can't even unlock Super Sonic on easy mode ;-;

All the GB Advance gamers are bangers, except possibly Sonic Pinball Party (which I've honestly never played). They're by far some of my favorite GBA games.

Pinball Party is actually decent, but it's too hard and it's unrewarding to play. The pinball board designs are really cool though. It's a great companion to the Advance games.

"Unleashed's werehog sections were 100% fine and enjoyable in their own way," I say into the microphone, to the dismay of the crowd.

^While I've never played Unleashed, I get the impression that most don't think the Werehog levels are bad so much as that most think they don't belong in a Sonic game. Same can be said for most of Sega and the devs they've outsourced too's other unpopular experiments with alternative gameplay styles.

I.e.:
Treasure hunting would make a fine base for a 3D collect-a-thon.
Mech shooting would be great for a third person shooter.
Chao are a great virtual pet.
Werehog is a decent entry-level hack-and-slash/beat-'em-up.

But their detractors don't play Sonic games for diversity in gameplay and long for another high-speed, momentum-based platformer with multiple playable characters that change things up but still have the same core gameplay, and apparently, the Modern versus Classic Sonic dynamic gave them enough of a taste of this to make Generations and Mania some of the most highly acclaimed Sonic games post-Dreamcast.

^I've mostly seen people -- admittedly, probably exaggeratedly, not putting much thought into it -- trashing on it, but when you put it like that I can understand it and even agree.

I also think it's generally better to master implementing one good game-play idea, than to have a bunch you are decent at; this is why so many 'mini-game collections' tend to not to ever be stunning as they are meant by nature to be a jack of all trades, master of none. However, games like Mario Party are still enjoyed by all types of people even though no one would ever look at one of the platforming mini-games and go "this is just as good as regular Mario". Basically, I don't think the (although valid) criticism of 'they should have just focused more time & effort on this one aspect' means that you automatically have to dismiss what is there. From what I've gathered people tend to easily brush over them and not appreciate them at all. Different strokes for different folks, but I've always thought 'just decent' is not a waste of time -- as long as you're getting some enjoyment out of it, then why not experience what the developers worked hard to create? For me, a game is at least okay at it's job as long as it makes me want to see more of it sometime in the future, and the werehog sections accomplished that for me. Maybe I'm just too easy-going or averse to giving criticism, I only say I hate a game when it actually causes me mental pain trying to play it (and trust me there are games out there that'll do that).

That's my take on most other underrated Sonic games as well. But this is not really a problem with talking about Sonic games so much as it is a problem with talking about and rating games in general. To get our thoughts across clearly and simply, it makes sense that we condense down into "I hate" or "I love" -- even when our feelings are much more complex than that, given how much goes into a game. When you completely despise a game you might still have little things that you like about it that you don't mention, especially if it's something that doesn't pertain to the game-play like graphics and animation.

I feel like sonic rush doesn't get the attention it deserves. The game was great and the soundtrack was as well.
