In recent times, after unveiling ancient stone tablets describing the destructive water-like beast, Dr. Eggman shattered the Master Emerald releasing Chaos and persuaded him to help him with his plans for world domination. After Eggman's plans fell through thanks to Sonic and his friends, Chaos absorbed the negative energies from the Chaos Emeralds becoming Perfect Chaos once more. To fight Perfect Chaos, Sonic absorbed the positive energies of the Chaos Emeralds and transformed into Super Sonic and defeated him. Perfect Chaos transformed back into Chaos and Tikal once again sealed herself away, taking Chaos with her. Neither Chaos nor Tikal have been seen since.

It is revealed during each of the main stories that in the past, Tikal had initially met Chaos under peaceful conditions. She became a friend to the chao and by extension him. However, when she found out about her father Pachacamac's plan to steal the emeralds to gain power, she attempted to tell Chaos to flee, but as the guardian of the shrine Chaos could not leave the place. When Pachacamac attacked the shrine, he barged past Tikal and the Chao, enraging Chaos and causing him to harness the emerald's energy to become Perfect Chaos.

Chaos 2 is the form of Chaos after absorbing two Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles faces this form of Chaos in the hotel of Station Square in Sonic Adventure. The second emerald gives Chaos 2 growth to the other arm now, making it symmetrical once more.
Chaos 3 No image available Chaos 3 would likely be the form of Chaos after absorbing three Chaos Emeralds. This form is never seen because in Sonic Adventure, Chaos 2 absorbs the next two emeralds at the same time after Sonic And Knuckles fight each other in the Mystic Ruins area.
Chaos 4
Chaos 4
Chaos 4 is the form of Chaos after absorbing four Chaos Emeralds. It i much larger and can extend its reach to attack much larger distances.
Chaos 5 No image available Chaos 5 would likely be the form of Chaos after absorbing five Chaos Emeralds. Like before, Chaos 4 absorbs the next two Chaos Emeralds at the same time on the Egg Carrier in Sonic Adventure, skipping the chance to see what this form looks like.
Chaos 6
Chaos 6
Chaos 6 is the form of Chaos after absorbing six Chaos Emeralds. It again grows in size, and likes to attack using shockwaves and trying to pull enemies inside of its body using its mouth.
Perfect Chaos

The ultimate form of Chaos after absorbing all seven Chaos Emeralds. In this form, he is colossal and you even see it erupt through a skyscraper in the Sonic Adventure intro movie. This form was so powerful it required Super Sonic to defeat it.

Sonic Channel

Chaos has their own page on Sonic Channel, which is written in Japanese.[1] Full text:

Translation:

A mutated Chao. Possessing high intelligence and abilities that far exceed those of the rest. A gentle personality; once profiting from the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, which guaranteed clear water around the altar and protected its race from foreign tribes. However, Knuckles' ancestors were a war-like people and slaughtered many of [Chaos'] fellow Chao in order to plunder the Chaos Emeralds, causing the enraged Chaos to go berserk, absorbing the 7 Chaos Emeralds and transforming into Perfect Chaos. The resultant heavy floods destroyed the civilisation.
Tikal, by means of a prayer, linked her consciousness with Chaos and they were sealed in the Master Emerald. As for the 7 Emeralds, they were unaccounted for, but it was at that point that the stones came to be called "Chaos Emeralds".

Sonic Chronicles: Codex

Chaos has an entry in the Sonic Chronicles Codex, under Perfect Chaos.

Perfect Chaos is a powerful and mysterious higher being, which Eggman refers
to as the "god of destruction". Perfect Chaos is actually only the most recent
form of the being, taken by Chaos after it absorbed the negative energies of
 all seven Chaos Emeralds.

Summoned by Pachacamac's attempt to steal the Master Emerald, Chaos attacked
the echidnas and nearly wiped them all out. A peaceful echidna named Tikal,
Pachacamac's daughter, soothed Chaos and managed to seal it, along with
herself, inside the Master Emerald. The energy surge threw Angel Island into
the air, causing it to hover over the land now known as Mystic Ruins.

Later, Eggman released Chaos from the Master Emerald to help him in his plans
for world domination. While Eggman's plans fell through thanks to Sonic and
his friends, Chaos decided to take the Chaos Emeralds for himself. Chaos
absorbed the negative energies from the Chaos Emeralds, becoming Perfect Chaos
once more. To fight Perfect Chaos, Sonic absorbed the positive energies of the
Chaos Emeralds and transformed into Super Sonic to defeat the powerful god.
Defeated, Perfect Chaos transformed back into Chaos once more, and Tikal
appeared to take Chaos away in a blinding flash of light.

Neither Perfect Chaos nor Tikal have been seen since.

Trivia

  • In the original Japanese cut scenes of Sonic Adventure, Chaos makes Chao sounds when transforming - the only mention of him being related to the Chao in-game. It was removed in later versions.[2]
  • The predecessor of the Sega Dreamcast was the Sega Saturn, which was known to not be able to handle transparency very well, if at all. Being a Dreamcast launch Game, Sega made sure to show off the capabilities of the Dreamcast hardware with a fully transparent Chaos as a main character.
