Small Animals are animals which are given to Chao to improve their stats. They can be found in the stages of the Sonic Adventure games.
The small animals inside Eggman's robots can be compared to Flickies of the original Sonic games.
Usage
Entering a garden will release the small animals where they will walk around the garden.
By picking them up and giving them to a chao as you would a fruit or hat, they will sparkle and gain/lose stats based on the small animal given. They will also learn an action by doing so. Once a small animal has been interacted with by a chao in this way, it will become unable to be picked up again, and will disappear fully when off screen.
Animal Parts
When a chao is given a small animal, they obtain a random amount of animal parts. These can be arms, legs, tails, wings, ears and various head decorations. These can be removed by using a Skeleton Dog. Chao drives do not give any animal parts to a chao, nor do they remove them; if the player prefers their chao to look a certain way, it is often recommended to raise all their stats first before attempting to keep the look, as small animals are overall a lot quicker than chaos drives for raising stats.
Re-using animal glitch
A glitch exists in SADX and SA2 where a small animal can be reused. This is achieved by placing an animal directly in front of the chao rather than giving it to the chao directly. By doing so, the chao will sparkle and gain stats as if interacting with the animal, but the animal will not spring back and become unusable, allowing it to be reused. This can be done to level up a Chao quickly, as the player does not need to keep returning to action stages to retrieve more animals.
Small Animals (SADX)
Small animals in SADX can be found in the enemies throughout the action stages. Only 10 animals may be carried at a time.
Small Animals (SA2)
Small animals do not appear in every enemy in this game, only a select few enemies still do this.
The main way to collect animals in Sonic Adventure 2 and SA2 Battle is to find them throughout action stages. Each action stage has a set amount of hidden small animals depending on the kind of stage; there are 10 in treasure hunting stages, 15 in mech stages and 20 in running stages. Collecting all small animals in a stage grants an extra life; animals found in Chao containers or enemies do not count towards this total.
There are also animals that can be found in the second and third Chao containers after obtaining a Chao key from the first; it must be picked up to get the animals. The second container contains an assortment of animals specific to the level, whereas the third will contain a mythical or ghost animal.
