These Chao Races are a set of races in the games Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
Description
The Chao all race against each other throughout an obstacle course. Each obstacle is overcome using a different stat:
Swim
The swim stat determines how well a Chao can swim, if at all. In the GC and HD versions of the games, at 667 points a Chao will improve its swim style to include arm motions, and much faster leg motions.
Fly
The fly stat determines how well a Chao can fly. Flying is used in races when jumping off of great heights, and a higher flying stat increase flight speed and distance traveled. Flying is generally fast, but only lasts for short portions of a race, and a very high fly stat even allows for skipping certain swimming sections of races.
Run
The run stat determines how quickly a Chao walks or runs, if at all, as well as how often chao trips up during the race. Run is an immensely important stat in all races, even those not focused on running, as almost all races have portions where Chao run across land. In Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast, Chao start walking at 15 Run, starts running at 200 Run, and dashes at 400 Run. In the GC and HD versions of the games, Chao will learn to walk at 50 Run, Run at 667 Run, and Dash at 1334 Run.
Power
The power stat determines how strong a Chao is. Strength is used in races to climb up walls, and to shake fruit loose from trees. Chao will be able to achieve these faster with a higher Power stat.
Stamina
The stamina stat determines the physical durability of a Chao- There is a Stamina bar in the top right with an amount of Stamina that slowly decreases throughout a race. The player can cheer on their Chao; this gives the Chao a speed boost in exchange for a portion of Stamina. However, if a Chao runs out of Stamina it will slow down by a lot and quickly fall behind in a race, so the player must be careful.
Intel
Intelligence is a hidden stat used in Chao Races on two occasions, allowing Chao to solve puzzles more quickly; it determines the speed at which Chao will open up a Jack-in-the-Box puzzle, as well as it improves puzzle solving speed and accuracy in the shape game when Chao must find the proper shaped fruit.
Luck
Also a hidden stat like Intel, despite popular belief, Luck is not used in Chao Races in the GC and HD versions of the game. Tripping is reduced by raising the run stat, not luck. The jack in the box having a good/bad outcome and other RNG elements of the races are completely random, except for in the HD releases where each outcome is fixed depending on the character the player is playing as.
The camera focuses on your Chao all the way throughout the race, unlike in Sonic Adventure 1 & DX. There is no option to cheer on the other Chao, except for in a Party Race.
Basic Strategy
For quickly obtaining emblems, is recommended to use a Neutral-aligned Chao as they can participate in all races.
Overall the races are fairly manageable with most Chao assuming the player has enough stamina; however, it is recommended to have at least a B in the Running stat levelled to a max level of 99, as it is arguably the most important race stat in these races so the high grade will make the races significantly easier. It is of course recommended to have Swim, Fly and Power levelled to 99 as well.
Races
Beginner Race
Beginner races are very short races where the player's Chao faces against low-level child opponents. Each race focuses on a different stat which allows for the player to understand how each stat affects certain aspects of the course the chao races in.
The player's Chao must compete and win in all Beginner Races first before unlocking the other sets of races. This does not have to be done by all Chao; once all 3 levels are beaten by any number of Chao, other races are unlocked and any Chao can participate in them regardless of previous racing experience.
Jewel Race
The Jewel races consist of 6 long race courses that have highly experienced Chao in them. These are significantly harder than the Beginner races, and have 5 levels instead of 3.
Challenge Race
The Challenge races are a set of more unusual races of which Chao face unorthodox opponents, from Jewel Chao to Animals and Omochao.
Hero Race
Only Hero and Neutral chao can participate in these races. The Chao faces Dark aligned Chao in these races in dark-themed courses.
Dark Race
Only Dark and Neutral chao can participate in these races. The Chao faces Hero aligned Chao in these races in light-themed courses.
Party Race
A Party Race is a multiplayer race against other Chao on the save file. It was removed from the HD port of SA2, but can be re-accessed with mods.
Prizes
Various prizes can be obtained from the different sets of races.
