Chaos Chao are a special evolution of Chao, named after the god of destruction and guardian of Chao, Chaos. Chaos Chao will never die or reincarnate, and are incapable of breeding. Once a Chao has evolved into a Chaos Chao, it will no longer be able to further raise its grades[1] or change its evolution. There are three varieties of Chaos Chao, one for each alignment, neutral, hero, and dark, called Light Chao, Angel Chao, and Devil Chao, respectively.

Requirements

Triggering evolution of a Chao into a Chaos Chao has four required special steps. A Chao must be properly aligned as neutral, hero, or dark to become the desired type of Chaos Chao. Due to the specific and special nature of the requirements, there are false rumors about the process of creating a Chaos Chao which may be commonly spread.

  • The Chao must have reincarnated at least twice.
  • The Chao must have over 80 happiness.
  • While as a child in its current life, the Chao must have been given at least one of every animal. Animals from previous lives will not help meet this requirement. A Chao can receive more than one of each animal.
  • The chao must be balanced in its Evolution, so that it would otherwise evolve into a Normal type Chao.

Appearance

Each Chaos Chao has a unique, bright emote ball, and large colored eyes, unlike those of other Chao. All Chaos Chao have the same facial expressions, no mouth and fully open eyes, meaning they will lose their facial features upon evolving into a Chaos Chao. In Sonic Adventure DX Chaos Chao also give off a unique sparkling effect. Chaos Chao do not get animal parts when given animals, or carry over any animal features from prior to evolution. Two-tone chaos chao, of any color, will have partially transparent features, on theirs hands and on portions of their head.

The Light Chao has a distinct appearance similar to Chaos, its namesake. The head shape, blue transparent features, hands, and bright green eyes are all similar to those of Chaos 0. The exact relationship between Chaos Chao and Chaos are unknown, however Chaos himself has been called a former Chao, mutated by proximity to the Master Emerald.

The Dark Chaos Chao has two devil-like horns and an additional two horns on its head pointing downwards. They feature a long, forked tail, much like a the tail of a Dark Normal Chao, except bigger. This Chao also has two spikes protruding from its arms, and sports a flame-like design on its hands and horns. The emote ball features a purple flame, much like the effect of a Half-fish except marginally bigger. An interesting feature of the Dark Chaos Chao is that its eyelids have a slightly different tone to the rest of the body, this is prevalent when a Monotone Normal Chao becomes a Dark Chaos Chao, where the eyelids appear purple while the rest of the body remains white.

Hero Chaos Chao, or Angel Chao, have two large wavy horns that typically have pink transparent highlights, and feature a long downturned spike that covers the back of the Chao. The back and feet of the Chao are speckled, with solid light blue colored eyes, and the emote ball is a transparent yellow halo.

Trivia

  • Chaos Chao, as with Character Chao, are the only Chao types that cannot breed or reincarnate.
  • While it may appear that Chaos Chao don't have wings, it is still possible to see their wings. If you raise an invisible Chao into a Chaos Chao, you will notice two tiny light-colored triangles where the wings would normally be found.
  • Chaos Chao can still get sick.
  • It is normally impossible to kill a Chaos Chao in SA2 on Dreamcast and in all other iterations thereafter. In SA1 for the Dreamcast, one could kill a Chaos Chao if their HP reaches zero.
  • If a Chao has a flame ball from a Half-fish when evolving into a Chaos Chao, it can emerge with the flame ball instead of the proper Emote Ball for a Chaos Chao, despite Chaos Chao having no other animal parts. This flame ball is not permanent, and will leave after giving other animals or Drives.
  • In Sonic Adventure 1 Dreamcast, Chaos Chao sparkles are different and have random velocities. Also, the sparkles do not load during Chao races.

Appearances in other games

  • A Light Chaos Chao can briefly be seen in Sonic Pinball Party after hitting the ball into Chao Growth 5 times.
