As of Sonic Adventure, these emerald are referred to as being filled with both positive and negative energy that can be harnessed by the users.
Appearances
Sonic The Hedgehog (1991)
The Chaos Emeralds were originally 6 emeralds in Sonic The Hedgehog. They are collected via Special Stages found at Checkpoints when 50 rings are collected.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
In this game the number of Chaos emeralds was brought to 7. This was the first game to feature Super Sonic transformation, where collecting all the emeralds and jumping with 50 rings allowed Sonic to enter an gold-coloured invincible state of high speeds. The number of rings also tick down until 0 where Sonic would return aback to normal.
Sonic Adventure
Sonic collects the Chaos Emeralds throughout several action stages. A chaos emerald owned by Tails is experimented with, causing his plane, the Tornado, to crash at the beginning of the game.
The chaos emeralds are used by Chaos when Pachacamac's tribe attacked the Chao and the shrine in search for power. In the present day, the Chaos emeralds were desired by Chaos due to his hate and rage, desiring the power to destroy until nothing is left as he attempted to in the past. During the Super Sonic story, Chaos uses the negative energy to become Perfect Chaos and Sonic uses the positive energy to become Super Sonic.
Sonic Adventure 2
Throughout the game, Dr Eggman and Shadow the Hedgehog work together to collect the Chaos Emeralds throughout the world:
- Shadow steals a Chaos Emerald from a bank before the events of the Hero Story.
- Tails has one from the beginning awarded to him after the events of Sonic Adventure 1.
- Rouge collects 3 emeralds from Prison Island during the action stage Security Hall.
