Every Chao begins its life in an egg. This is the unhatched, initial stage of a Chao's life. All Chao begin their life as an egg, and upon reincarnation they return to this state.

Description

The Egg's shell comes in all kinds of colours and patterns, indicating the breed of Chao that will hatch from it. Every single breed has a corresponding egg to go with it. Unfortunately, most of these are unobtainable without hacking. This is because most breeds must be created through mating, and mating always produces a normal-looking egg; therefore, the eggs for those breeds can normally never be seen.

The kinds of egg that are available without hacking are Two-Tone regular-coloured eggs, all Mono-Tone colour eggs (both shiny and non-shiny versions) apart from Mono-Tone regular-coloured, and all Jewel eggs.

When a Chao hatches from its egg, two halves of the eggshell will be left. The lower half of the shell cannot be interacted with and will simply disappear when you leave the Chao Garden. The other upper half will stay in your Chao Garden, and can be picked up and thrown around; this piece of shell can be worn as a hat, and can also be sold to the Black Market.

Obtaining Eggs

Sonic Adventure 1 & DX

Each garden contains 2 regular-coloured two-tone eggs. More eggs of different colours can be bought from the Black Market; in SA1DC, the black market is an online shop, whereas on SADX the black market is accessible offline. They both offer different eggs depending on the version; SA1DC offers jewel eggs whereas SADX's Black Market offers monotone eggs similar to those of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Other methods of obtaining eggs include breeding and reincarnating a Chao.

In both of these game, one Gold egg, one Silver egg and one Black egg are available once per Chao garden file in each section of the game. These special adventure-stage eggs are obtained through solving small puzzles and must be manually brought to the Garden.

  • In Station Square, a shopkeeper has a Gold egg on display in a window. This egg cannot be retrieved immediately, as it is on a pressure plate which causes the store to lock down if the egg is picked up. However, it can be obtained by replacing the egg with a stone.
  • In the Mystic Ruins, a Silver egg sits on a pedestal in the drained lake where Chaos is fought in his fourth form. Hidden behind a waterfall, a switch on the floor of the drained lake must be activated in order to cause hidden steps to emerge, allowing the player to reach a stone button and trigger it, which pushes the egg out of the waterfall and into the lake.
  • In the Egg Carrier, a Black egg is located in the middle cell where Amy is being held. It can be accessed very easily by pressing a switch to open the cell door. In SA1DC the Black egg is two-tone, whereas in SADX it's monotone.

Sonic Adventure 2 & Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

The initial Chao Garden offers 2 regular-coloured two-tone eggs, with the Hero Garden and Dark Garden offering 1 regular-coloured two-tone egg each. Similar to the first Adventure game, the SA2 Black Market is online whereas the SA2B Black Market can be found in the Chao Kindergarten. Other methods of obtaining eggs include breeding and reincarnating a Chao. The SA2 black market offers Jewel chao and the SA2B market offers monotone shiny and non-shiny eggs.

In Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, each save file can obtain 2 sets of eggs; the 3rd set will never appear in the Black Market for that save file no matter how many emblems are collected. The sets are as follows:

  • Set 1 is Red, Sky Blue, Brown
  • Set 2 is Yellow, Pink, Purple
  • Set 3 is Blue, Orange, Green

This includes both their shiny and non-shiny colours.

Tiny Chao Garden

The Tiny Chao Garden is a method of obtaining eggs for the Gamecube series of games, SADX and SA2B. They offer a regular-coloured two tone egg when a Chao is not present in the garden, and offer jewel eggs when a Chao is present.

The Tiny Chao Garden is needed to get all Jewel eggs in the Gamecube SA2B, and jewel chao other than Gold and Silver in SADX.

The SA2B Black Market.

Hatching

Eggs can be hatched through three main methods.

  • The simplest method is to simply wait. The Chao will hatch from the egg on its own after a period of time. Depending on the version of the game being played, this is around 2-6 minutes.
  • The most common method is to pick up the egg and shake it for a few seconds, then set the egg back down. The Chao will hatch almost immediately.
  • Finally, the egg can be thrown at a wall (or in SA1DC, simply thrown). The Chao will emerge sprawled the on ground with a swirl over it's head. This will cause the Chao to dislike the character who hatched it by about -10. It does not lower the Chao's happiness or have any significant lasting effects otherwise.

Hatching Time

When leaving the egg to hatch naturally:

SA1 Dreamcast: Between 5-6 minutes.

SA2 Dreamcast: Between 2-3 minutes.

Modern versions: To be confirmed.

Chao Features

SA1 Dreamcast: The Chao's face is determined upon formation of the egg. The method used to hatch a Chao has no effects or influence on it after the egg is physically formed.

SA2 Dreamcast: The Chao's face is randomly assigned upon hatching. The method used to hatch does not influence it.

Modern versions: The Chao's face and personality is determined upon formation of the egg. The method used to hatch a Chao has no effects or influence on it after the egg is physically formed.

Colours

Eggs can be a variety of colours other than the Regular Egg Colour. This table provides a quick summary of their appearances. Note that all the two-tone eggs (except the regular-coloured two-tone egg, which is visually identical to the white two-tone egg) are unavailable without hacking.

Trivia

  • One of the Challenge Races will pit the Chao against walking Chao Eggs.
  • While throwing eggs at a wall will hatch them, throwing them onto the floor or dropping them from a significant height will not.
  • The top part of the eggshell can be worn as a hat. The bottom part, however, cannot be interacted with in any way, and will disappear permanently upon leaving and reentering the garden.
  • Every time a Chao reincarnates it will emerge from its cocoon as a new egg, of the same type that it had hatched from.
