This page goes through various events happen throughout Chao Adventure.
Distractions
A chao can be distracted and interrupted on it's journey. This can be caused by:
- Chao tripping up while walking
- Chao struggling in water drowning
- Chao losing balance while flying
- Chao losing balance on a rope and hanging from it
- All Halfway points
Each location has 1 random 'slip up' and the Halfway Point. The player presses 'A' to resume travelling.
Chest
Chao can find a chest on it's travels, either randomly or by defeating a bully Chao. There are 3 choices the player can pick from which are hidden from the player; these are always in the same arrangement, and they cycle between the following combinations:
- Hastnut, Lemon, Lazynut
- Lifenut, Empty, Plum
- Starnut, Grape, Lazynut
- Chaonut, Cherry, Empty
Bully Chao
Chao can encounter a Bully; if it does, a large flashing ‘!?’ will appear on the VMU screen and a fight will be initiated. The goal is to deplete the bully Chao's HP before your own. If your Chao wins, then Chao will gain a treasure chest; if it loses, the bully will take a fruit from Chao.
When attacking, there is a scrolling marker at the bottom of the screen that will cross filled dots and cleared dots. To attack, the player must press 'A' when the marker is above a clear dot. Chao will miss if it is above a filled dot. If the chao has a higher Power stat, there will be more cleared dots, making fighting easier. The game will automatically progress if the player takes too long to press, which could be above either filled or clear dot.
Different bullies can be encountered:
- Child Bully (2HP) – Appears in Field and Jungle.
- Swim Bully (4HP) – Appears in Beach, Forest, Wasteland, Bigtree and Shrine.
- Fly Bully (6HP) – Appears in Cliff, City, Tower, Oasis and Shrine.
- Run Bully (8HP) – Appears in Jungle, Tower and Shrine.
- Power Bully (10HP) – Appears in Tower, Oasis, River and Cave.
Chao can send mail while on the quest that the player can read. This is received on the hour (1:00, 2:00 etc) based on the VMU internal clock. It's messages are based around what time it is, such as morning hours saying good morning to the player.
Meeting a Character
While adventuring, Chao can meet any of the playable characters in SADX and gain some form of boost from them.
- Sonic: Gives your Chao +10 running stat.
- Tails: Gives your Chao +10 flying stat.
- Knuckles: Gives your Chao +10 power stat.
- Amy: Restores your Chao’s HP fully.
- Big The Cat: Gives your Chao +10 swimming stat.
- e102 Gamma: Nothing known; it is likely unintended to be this way.
Each character is found in a specific location, detailed below.

Stage 1: Field
- 1501m – Fight with a Child Bully
- 1783m – Halfway point (Chao will lie on a beach ball)
- 2500m – Fight a Child Bully
- 2986m – Treasure Chest
Stage 2a: Beach
- 4103m – Fight with a Swim Bully
- 5383m – Halfway point (Chao will lie on a beach ball)
- 5588m – Treasure Chest
Stage 2b: Woods
- 4103m – Treasure Chest
- 5383m – Halfway point (Chao will lie on a beach ball)
- 5588m – Fight with a Swim Bully
Stage 3a: Ocean
- 8701m – Treasure Chest
- 8983m – Halfway point (Chao will be distracted by a friendly dolphin)
- 10698m – Chao will meet Big the Cat, gains +10 swimming stat.
Stage 3b: Cliff
- 8189m – Fight with a Fly Bully
- 8983m – Halfway point (Chao will be distracted by a friendly bird)
- 9188m – Treasure Chest
- 10698m – Chao will meet Tails, gains +10 flying stat.
Stage 3c: Waste

Stage 4a: City
