Jewel Races are a category of Chao Races in Sonic Adventure 2 which are unlocked after finishing all Beginner Races. These are the main set of races in SA2, and are all much harder and longer than the Beginner Races. The Jewel Races are separated into six courses, with five levels of difficulty in each. After completing all of the difficulty levels for the first four courses of the Jewel Races (Aquamarine, Topaz, Peridot, and Garnet courses) the next two (Onyx and Diamond courses) are unlocked. After completing all six Jewel Races, then the Challenge Races are unlocked. And, if the player has evolved a Hero Chao and a Dark Chao, then the Hero Races and Dark Races are unlocked, respectively.

The first four Jewel Races each focus on a particular stat, Aquamarine emphasizing Swim, Topaz emphasizing Fly, Peridot emphasizing Run, and Garnet emphasizing Power. The Onyx course focuses on Luck and Intelligence, and the Diamond course tests every skill of the Chao. Every course requires a high enough Stamina stat, and despite not saying it, a high Run stat is very important as well. The same courses get reused in the Challenge races, usually the Diamond course. Each of the first four Jewel Courses contains the same stat-focused Beginner Race course.

When a Chao completes the fifth difficulty the Chao will receive a medal of the respective Jewel, and a toy which it may play with when bored. If a Chao receives a new medal, it must complete the fifth difficulty level of a course again to wear its old medal.

Races

Aquamarine Course

"Key to winning is swimming."

This course is focused on running and swimming; the largest pool is near the end.

Topaz Course

Races-sa2-topaz.gif

"Key to winning is flying."

Flying is needed to have an edge, although nearly every other skill is tested too.

Peridot Course

Races-sa2-peridot.gif

"Key to winning is running."

This course is a long running race with no other skills needed.

Garnet Course

"Key to winning is power."

This course needs running and power. Power is required because of a few cliffs that need to be climbed, as well as a tree that you have to shake down a nut from to eat.

Onyx Course

Races-sa2-onyx.gif

"Key to winning is intelligence and luck."

Running is needed as well as intelligence/luck. The first puzzle is a Jack in the Box (intelligence determines how quickly the Chao opens it, luck if there is a spring toy inside to startle the Chao), the second shows a picture of a fruit that your Chao must pick up (intelligence), and the last part needs luck to avoid falling down a hole after choosing a finishing path.

Diamond Course

"Key to winning is general ability."

Every skill is required to pass in this race, with the Running stat having the most impact.

Prizes

For each of the Jewel races, beating the 5th level earns a prize as well as a medal, similar to the prerequisite Beginner races. These are as follows:

Race Medal Toy Image Description

Topaz Races-sa2-topazmedal.png Broomstick Races-sa2-broom.png While in the garden, the chao may sweep the floor using the broom.
Peridot Races-sa2-peridotmedal.png Children's book Races-sa2-childrensbook.png While in the garden, the chao may read this on the floor.
Garnet Races-sa2-garnetmedal.png Pogo stick Races-sa2-pogo.png While in the garden, the chao may use this to jump around on the spot.
Onyx Races-sa2-onyxmedal.png Set of crayons Races-sa2-crayons.png While in the garden, the chao may use these to draw different pictures than those learned in the Chao Classroom.
Diamond Races-sa2-diamondmedal.png Bubbles Races-sa2-bubbles.png While in the garden, the chao may blow bubbles.

All medals can be viewed at the Health Center in the Chao Kindergarten. If the medal was the most recent to be earned by the chao, it will be visible on their chest.

Rivals & Other Chao

"Rival" Chao are those that appear in the same race consistently with the same stats and appearance. Every race has anywhere from 0 to 7 rivals. Non-rival race opponents have random stats taken from a certain range appropriate for each race. Being a rival Chao does not necessarily mean that that Chao has the highest stats of the opponents (although they certainly can be the most challenging opponent.) The rivals of each Jewel Race, course and difficulty level, and their stats, are shown:
