The Lost Chao are Chao hidden somewhere during the third mission of action stages in Sonic Adventure 2.

Lost Chao are found on the third mission of all stages, excluding Route 101, Route 280, and Green Hill. The aim is to find the lost Chao somewhere in the stage, taking you down alternate paths and into secret rooms; some routes are more complicated than others, but a select few can be completed in under a minute, assuming you know where to go. Unlike the master emerald pieces in the treasure hunting stages, lost Chao are always in the same place.

Their appearance is similar to that of a normal, neutral Chao, the Chao type most commonly seen outside of the Adventure games, with a few minor differences. They can be found crying with the angry/upset emote ball above their heads, which changes to a heart once the mission is complete.

Similar to the second mission, there’s no time limit in the third mission, and reaching the goal ring (now labeled BACK instead) will simply restart you at the beginning, keeping your time, score, and ring count; making the mission useful for collecting large amounts of rings in one go. Since only time is taken into account for your final rank in this mission, you cannot play through the stage multiple times and get a high score for an easy A rank, you must complete the mission quickly to get an A.

It is recommended that you collect the “Mystic Melody” upgrade for all characters before completing these missions. All but three missions require it for completion, and many others require other upgrades such as Sonic’s “Bounce Bracelet.” This guide will assume you have unlocked all upgrades for all characters.

There are differences between the Dreamcast version of SA2, and the GC+ version of SA2; these differences are noted for each stage with relevant screenshots, but this guide is written for the more widely available GC+ version, with DC differences noted, unless stated otherwise. Timings for ranks are the same across all versions.

There are differences between the Dreamcast version of SA2, and the GC+ version of SA2; for the stages where differences exist, the guide will split into a Dreamcast version and GameCube version. Make sure you read the guide relevant to your version of SA2 to avoid confusion. For stages with no differences, the more widely available GC+ version will be used. Timings for ranks are the same across all versions.
