Rings are a currency found throughout the Sonic games that are used for various purposes. In the Chao Garden, they are often used to buy items for the Chao.
Uses
Black Market
The Black Market is the most common use for rings in the Chao Garden. Here, the player uses the rings to buy rare eggs, fruit, seeds and hats. The more emblems the player collects, the more items the player can buy.
Methods of obtaining in SA2B
City Escape
Being the first level of the game, rings are in abundance and easy to get. It is fairly easy to net 300-400 rings in every run of City Escape without getting hit.
Selling Eggshells
Rarer eggs from the Black Market have eggshells which sell for more. However, you only gain these eggshells once without mods or cheats.
Glitches
There exists a bug in the Gamecube versions of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, where if an item is sold within the chao garden and the game is reset without saving, both the items and rings gained remain. The recommended instructions are as follows:
- Enter Chao garden
- Sell a high priced item e.g. a shiny eggshell to the blackmarket.
- DO NOT press start and exit as this will save the game, causing you to lose the item; just press the reset button on the console.
- Re enter chao world.
You should have the item that you 'sold' previously, and the rings you gained from it also. To save these changes, you do need to quit the garden normally to 'trigger' a save of both files.
Methods of obtaining in other games
Glitches (SADX)
Since the Chao Garden only ever saves when you exit the Chao Garden, or transport your Chao to the Tiny Chao Garden, and also saves your save file at the same time, you cannot reset at any point to still get the rings and also keep your items. However, there's only one thing that only saves your save file: Getting an Emblem. When you get an Emblem, the game forces a save on your save file. However, it does not save your Chao Garden. So, if you sell items to the Black Market, then enter the Chao Races and win an Emblem, then reset, you will still have your rings, but also the item you sold. This can only be done up to 5 times per save file, as there are only 5 chao race emblems. Since rings are tied to your save file, this is only useful if you use this save file to spend rings on various fruit or if you manipulate the Black Market to still have items it would not normally have at the amount of Emblems you currently have by switching save files before the Black Market updates its inventory.
