In the ancient Echidna villiage in the Sonic Adventure flashback levels, there is an unnamed echidna who mentions Chao in Sonic Adventure.
"These strange creatures seem to be living near the altar. They're small and... well, it's hard to describe... My grandma called them "Chao."" "Chao are little, jelly-like creatures. They aren't dangerous or anything... And they're so cute...!"
In Japanese this is "x" Translation: "At the altar where the Emerald is enshrined... there exist mysterious small animals. How do I explain it... they're like these small, elusive creatures. According to the story told by the chief's mother, they're apparently called "Chao."" "The creatures called Chao are jiggly and squishy. They're worthless and stingy creatures... but they're pretty cute...!"
