The Visual Memory Unit, also known as VMU, is the primary memory card used for the Sega Dreamcast. It is a one megabit (128 kilobyte) memory card split into 200 512 byte "blocks", that can also play games with it's 48x32 dot matrix display and built on controls. Most third party memory cards lacked the screen and controls, and Sega would later release their 4X memory card, which lacked also lacked a screen or controls, but instead had 4 built in 200 block memory cards. In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, it can be used for saving game data and playing the games Chao Adventure and Chao Adventure 2.

Sonic Adventure uses 10 blocks for regular game data and 28 blocks for Chao data. You may also download Chao Adventure onto a VMU, which is 128 blocks, though it may be saved on a separate memory card from the other save data if desired. Chao Adventure is a game played on the VMU that can be used to obtain certain exclusive items and level up Chao. It can also be used to bring Chao from Sonic Adventure into Sonic Adventure 2. If one were to put regular save data, Chao save data, and Chao Adventure onto one VMU, it would take up 166 blocks, leaving 34 blocks for use with DLC or save data for other games.

Sonic Adventure 2 uses 18 blocks for main game data and 52 blocks for Chao data. Similar to Sonic Adventure, Chao Adventure 2 may also be downloaded for 128 blocks, and can be put onto a different VMU if desired. Chao Adventure 2 may be used to obtain certain items, like special fruit and seeds, as well as stat raising. If one were to put regular save data, Chao save data, and Chao Adventure 2 onto one VMU, it would take up 198 blocks, only leaving 2 blocks for anything else.
